Owen Wijndal Leaves Ajax as Left-Back Options Change

Owen Wijndal has left Ajax with immediate effect, drawing a sudden line under a spell in Amsterdam that never quite became what it promised to be.

The 26-year-old left-back, once signed as a long-term solution, found himself without any realistic prospect of minutes this season. After weeks of talks, both club and player agreed there was only one way out: terminate the contract and move on. His next destination is still unknown.

Ajax rip up a deal that was due to run until mid-2027, clearing space in the wage bill and, just as importantly, in a crowded left-back group. The club brought in Caio Henrique and Jofre Torrents this summer, and the hierarchy on the flank became brutally clear in recent days.

Henrique had already edged ahead of Wijndal in training and selection. Then came the Telstar match. In a 0-4 win, 19-year-old Spaniard Torrents came off the bench to taste first-team action. Wijndal never left his seat. For a player who arrived for around €10 million from AZ in 2022, it was a stark snapshot of how far his status had fallen.

Behind the scenes, discussions intensified. Both sides hunted for a solution that would avoid a season of frustration on one side and a blocked pathway on the other. That solution arrived this week. On Wednesday, Wijndal said his goodbyes to his team-mates at the Johan Cruyff ArenA and walked away as a free agent.

His Ajax story is not without substance. The Zaandam-born defender made 77 official appearances for the club, contributing 3 goals and 7 assists. Last season he spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Royal Antwerp FC, a sign even then that his long-term future in Amsterdam was under scrutiny.

Now the break is clean. Ajax push forward with Henrique and Torrents as their new options on the left. Wijndal, still in his mid-twenties and with international experience behind him, suddenly sits on the market.

The only question left is where he chooses to restart a career that, not long ago, looked set to be anchored in Amsterdam.
