NorthEast United Signs Rising Defender Pramveer Singh

NorthEast United FC have pulled off one of the standout domestic moves of the upcoming ISL season, winning the race for highly rated India international defender Pramveer Singh despite firm interest from several rival clubs.

The 18-year-old, out of contract after the 2025-26 campaign with Punjab FC, had become one of the most coveted Indian prospects on the market. Multiple ISL sides sounded him out. Only one convinced him.

He chose the Highlanders.

According to sources, Pramveer has agreed a three-year deal with NorthEast United, with paperwork expected to be completed shortly. The key to the move was not a signing-on fee or a headline salary. It was minutes.

“Playing time was a major factor in his decision,” a source tracking the transfer told Khel Now, adding that three ISL clubs had been in for the defender before he committed to Guwahati.

For NorthEast United, who have been steadily reshaping their identity under head coach Juan Pedro Benali, this is another clear marker of intent: build around India’s best young talent and give them the stage to grow.

A rapid climb through India’s ranks

Pramveer’s rise has been anything but gradual. It has been a surge.

In just three years he has ticked off almost every rung in the national team ladder. U-17. U-20. U-23. And now, the senior side.

He first caught wider attention at the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup, where his left-footed composure and timing in the tackle stood out against continental opposition. From there, his development accelerated inside Punjab FC’s academy and youth structure.

Earlier this month, the defender completed the jump that every academy player dreams of, making his senior India debut against Tajikistan. It was another step in a journey that has rarely paused for breath.

His progress has been closely linked with NorthEast United assistant coach Naushad Moosa, who worked with him in the India U-23 setup. India fell just short of qualifying for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, but Pramveer emerged from that campaign with his reputation enhanced, delivering a string of assured displays at the back that underlined his readiness for bigger stages.

From Punjab FC prodigy to ISL record-breaker

Within Punjab FC, Pramveer moved quickly from promise to production.

He backed up his U-17 Asian Cup breakthrough with consistent performances in the Indian Youth League, then became a cornerstone of Punjab’s Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) side in 2024. He did not just feature; he played every minute of their successful title-winning campaign.

The reward was swift. Promotion to the senior squad, and then a slice of ISL history.

Still 17, he was handed a start against Mohun Bagan and, at 17 years and 189 days, became the youngest starter in ISL history. It was a bold call from Punjab. He justified it.

Across the 2025-26 season, he featured in 13 matches in all competitions, scoring once and steadily reinforcing the view that he is one of the most promising young defenders in the country. A left-footed centre-back who can handle the physical side of the league and still play out from the back does not stay under the radar for long. He didn’t.

Why NorthEast United moved first – and fastest

By the time his Punjab contract ticked towards its end, NorthEast United had already been tracking him for months.

The club view Pramveer as a long-term pillar rather than a short-term gamble. Under Benali, the Highlanders have leaned into youth, trusting energy and ambition over experience for its own sake. The staff believe regular game time in that environment can push the teenager’s development into overdrive.

Benali has built a strong reputation in India for improving young players, polishing raw ability into reliable first-team output. NorthEast United will expect Pramveer to follow that path, not just as a squad option, but as a defender who can grow into a central figure in their back line over the next three seasons.

For the player, the choice cut to something simple: career trajectory.

Several clubs, sources say, were prepared to put more money on the table. NorthEast United countered with something different – a clear, believable route to the starting XI, backed by a coach and staff he already knows and trusts, and a track record of giving young players real responsibility.

For an 18-year-old who has already worn India colours at U-17, U-20, U-23 and senior level, the message was compelling. The next step is not about badges on a CV. It is about playing, learning, and making mistakes on the pitch rather than the bench.

NorthEast United have offered that stage. Now the question is how quickly Pramveer Singh can turn opportunity into authority at the heart of their defence.
