Nordin Jackers Faces Tough Decision at Club Brugge

Nordin Jackers is staring at a January crossroads.

Once pencilled in as the man to push Yan Sommer at Club Brugge, the 29-year-old has now slipped to third in the pecking order. HLN report that Ivan Leko has made his choice: teenage prospect Argus Vanden Driessche is now the official back-up to Sommer.

That is a brutal twist for Jackers. When Club Brugge brought in Sommer from Inter, the message was clear enough – the Swiss international would start, Jackers would wait in the wings. A familiar role, but still a meaningful one for a goalkeeper in his prime years.

Now even that seat on the bench has gone.

Sommer himself has not exactly glided into life at Club Brugge. He produced some key saves against Antwerp at the weekend, but he was also at fault for the goal they conceded. On another day, that kind of error might have opened the door for the experienced understudy.

Instead, it underlined something else. Inside the club, faith in 19-year-old Vanden Driessche is sky high. High enough that, even with Sommer showing early nerves, Leko has turned to the teenager as his No. 2.

For Jackers, the message could not be clearer.

He has performed whenever called upon, stepping in for Simon Mignolet in previous seasons and convincing a chunk of the Club Brugge support that he was ready to claim the starting shirt. Those fans will recognise the harshness of his current situation: from credible contender to emergency option in a matter of months.

At 29, though, he cannot hide behind sentiment. A third-choice role offers almost no minutes, no rhythm, and no platform for a goalkeeper who still talks in terms of ambition rather than nostalgia.

The Belgian Pro League will have noticed. Jackers’ body of work since arriving from OH Leuven is strong enough to draw interest, especially from clubs seeking a reliable No. 1 rather than a project. He brings experience, a calm presence, and the knowledge of what it takes to operate inside a title-chasing dressing room.

Club Brugge have nailed their colours to Sommer and Vanden Driessche. The next move now belongs to Jackers – and it is hard to see it being anything other than away from Bruges when the window opens.
