Mason Greenwood Joins Fenerbahce After Marseille Spell
Mason Greenwood’s turbulent spell at Marseille is over. His next act takes him to Istanbul, to a club that has staked serious money and its attacking future on him: Fenerbahce.
The French side confirmed on Wednesday that the 24-year-old forward has joined the Turkish giants on a permanent deal, ending a two-year stay on the Mediterranean that was as productive on the pitch as it was fraught off it.
“Olympique de Marseille announces the transfer of Mason Greenwood to Fenerbahce,” the club said in an official statement, thanking him for his two seasons and stressing that the decision came after “a joint discussion between the player and the club, who mutually agreed to end their collaboration.”
A ruthless finisher in Ligue 1
Whatever the noise around him, Greenwood delivered goals.
In his debut season in Ligue 1, he hit 22 goals and added six assists in 36 appearances, driving Marseille to a second-place finish and a return to the Champions League. He then raised the bar again in 2025-26: 26 goals, 11 assists, 45 games in all competitions. Those are elite numbers in any league.
His technical quality and variety in the final third made him one of the division’s standout forwards and earned him a place among the five finalists for the UNFP Player of the Season award. Defenders struggled to contain him; awards panels could not ignore him.
Marseille, though, chose to cash in while his value was soaring.
Friction behind the scenes, a clean break in the end
Behind that goalscoring sheen, the relationship had clearly frayed. Reports of disciplinary issues and tension with former sporting director Medhi Benatia never truly went away, and the club’s hierarchy has now turned the page.
New sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, speaking in his first press conference, made it clear the player pushed for the exit.
“I think you all know the complexities of the Greenwood deal with the image of the player,” Lorenzi said. “There weren’t a lot of opportunities with Mason, but I want to be precise when I say that the player wanted to leave the club as quick as possible.
“The numbers are communicated by people that don’t have the right information. All I can say is that the club got what it wanted. Okay, we thought that more clubs were going to knock on the door. So the best option was this club that the player absolutely wanted to go to.”
Marseille walk away with a substantial fee and the sense that, for all the goals, this was the right moment to part ways.
Atletico snubbed, Fenerbahce pounce
The route to Turkey was anything but straightforward.
Atletico Madrid had appeared to be in pole position, seeing Greenwood as a long-term successor to Antoine Griezmann. Diego Simeone’s side had moved aggressively and, for a time, looked set to win the race.
Then the deal collapsed.
Atleti were reportedly left feeling “disrespected” by a lack of communication from the player’s camp in the final stages of negotiations. Once that relationship soured, the door swung open for Fenerbahce.
The Istanbul club did not hesitate. They moved decisively to close the agreement and have now confirmed they will pay Marseille €39m, spread over three years in equal instalments. For Fenerbahce, it is a statement fee and a clear sign of intent as they chase domestic dominance and a deeper run in Europe.
A new focal point in Istanbul
Greenwood has signed a four-year contract and is expected to become the focal point of Ismail Kartal’s attack. The club’s supporters have been told exactly what they want to hear.
“It was a no-brainer when they were interested in me,” Greenwood said in an official video message to fans. “It’s the biggest club in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started.”
He arrives in Istanbul with a proven scoring record in three different leagues: a breakthrough at Manchester United, a productive spell in Spain with Getafe, and two prolific seasons in France with Marseille. Turkey now becomes his fourth major European stop, and perhaps the most emotionally charged yet.
Fenerbahce are betting that in one of world football’s most feverish atmospheres, a forward who thrives under the spotlight will once again find the net – and, this time, a home that truly fits.
