Marli Salmon's Injury Halts England Under-18 Debut
Arsenal teenager Marli Salmon has been forced to put his England Under-18 debut on ice after withdrawing from the squad through injury.
The 17-year-old defender, highly regarded inside the club, had just enjoyed a breakthrough moment with his first senior appearance of the season in Arsenal’s 4-2 EFL Cup win over Ipswich Town last Tuesday. That outing was meant to be the springboard into his first taste of Under-18 international football.
Instead, the brakes have been slammed on.
Salmon’s setback halts England bow
Salmon, who has already made four appearances for England Under-17s, had been named in Will Antwi’s Under-18 squad for a trio of friendlies against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea. It would have been his first involvement at that age group, a natural next step for a player climbing steadily through the ranks.
The call, though, has had to wait. The Arsenal youngster has pulled out of Antwi’s group after picking up an injury, with the exact nature of the problem yet to be disclosed.
Antwi has moved quickly to plug the gap, drafting in Chelsea defender Gabriel Sambou. Sambou brings his own international pedigree, having already represented both Poland and England at youth level.
Salmon, meanwhile, returns to Arsenal to focus on recovery. If the issue proves minor, the plan is for him to be back in action for the club’s Under-21s in Premier League 2 against Sunderland on October 10. That is, of course, unless Mikel Arteta decides his progress merits a place in the senior squad for the Premier League clash with Leeds on the same day.
For a 17-year-old on the cusp of more first-team exposure, that decision could say plenty about how fast Arsenal want his rise to be.
Rice joins casualty list as England plans shift
News of Salmon’s withdrawal landed on the same day that Declan Rice also stepped away from international duty, pulling out of Thomas Tuchel’s senior England squad.
Rice’s absence is understood to be down to load management after a punishing year. The midfielder played 55 games for Arsenal last season and added seven more at the World Cup. This term he has already started six of Arsenal’s eight matches, including all five in the Premier League.
The message is clear: the mileage is adding up, and England are choosing caution over risk.
Elsewhere, defender Piero Hincapie has been left out of Ecuador’s squad amid concerns over his fitness, underlining how early-season demands are already reshaping international selections.
For Salmon, the picture is different but just as delicate. Arsenal will now weigh his immediate frustration against the bigger picture: protect a promising defender now, or push him faster into the senior frame as October 10 looms on two fronts.
