Marcus Rashford's Future at Barcelona: Bernardo Silva's Impact

Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona dream is hanging by a thread – and it may be Bernardo Silva, not Anthony Gordon or Julián Álvarez, who finally cuts it.

The England forward, on loan from Manchester United since the summer of 2025, has made it clear he wants to stay at Camp Nou. Barcelona, for their part, like what they’ve seen. But they don’t like it enough to pay the €30m (£26m) option they agreed with United.

And the market around them is moving fast.

Gordon in, Álvarez targeted – and then Bernardo

Barcelona have already committed big money to one winger. Anthony Gordon is on his way from Newcastle United in a deal worth £69m (€80m, $92.5m), another left-sided, England international cutting into the territory Rashford has occupied.

They are also in talks with Atlético de Madrid over striker Julián Álvarez, a move that could cost as much as €150m (£130m, $175m). Those two deals alone would reshape the attack and squeeze minutes for any loanee still waiting for a permanent nod.

Yet in Spain, the feeling is that a different name carries the real weight for Rashford’s fate.

According to Barcelona-based outlet Sport, it is Bernardo Silva’s potential arrival that would close the door completely. The Manchester City midfielder is set to leave the Premier League champions this summer and, crucially, would be available as a free agent.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, has “offered” him to Barcelona. Inside the club, the idea is being taken very seriously.

Sport reports that Barça view Bernardo as a player at the peak of his powers, pointing to another influential season under Pep Guardiola at City. They see leadership, personality, and a rare kind of versatility: someone who can operate in midfield, drift to the right, and crucially, give Lamine Yamal a breather without a major drop in quality.

For a squad that has had to juggle finances and depth, that kind of profile is gold.

The Portuguese playmaker is said to be waiting for Barcelona, though there is also a rival offer on the table from Atlético de Madrid – the same club Barcelona are negotiating with over Álvarez. One set of talks could easily bleed into the other.

The key line from Sport is blunt: if Bernardo signs, Rashford goes.

With Gordon already secured and Bernardo earmarked for minutes both centrally and on the right, the Catalan hierarchy see no space for another wide forward on significant wages, particularly one they would still need to pay a fee for. The Englishman, who has spent this season on loan at Camp Nou, would be pushed out of the equation.

Rashford’s price tag sparks Arsenal calls

That scenario has not gone unnoticed in England – especially in North London.

With Rashford’s buy option at €30m (£26m, $35m), the contrast to Gordon’s £69m fee has turned heads. One of those belongs to TNT Sports presenter and Arsenal supporter Laura Woods, who believes Mikel Arteta should seize the opportunity.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Woods made her stance clear: “I would love to see Rashford there! For that amount of money, what was it? £26m or something like that.

“I don’t understand the difference there [compared to Anthony Gordon] in price tag. Marcus Rashford at Barcelona seemed to really work.

“You’re right, I’d kind of like to see him back in the Premier League as well.”

It is a tantalising prospect. A player of Rashford’s pedigree, potentially available at a fee that now looks modest in a market where Gordon is commanding almost three times as much, would tempt any top club with room in their forward line.

For now, Rashford waits in limbo, his future effectively tied to a decision being made in Barcelona’s boardroom about a Portuguese playmaker from Manchester. If Bernardo Silva walks through the Camp Nou doors this summer, the message for the England winger will be unmistakable.

Time to find a new home.
