Manchester United Negotiates Zirkzee Loan to Juventus
Manchester United are deep in talks with Juventus over a deal that could quietly draw a line under Joshua Zirkzee’s brief and stuttering spell at Old Trafford.
The Italian giants are negotiating a loan move with an option to buy, with United prepared to let the Dutch forward leave for around £30 million, despite paying roughly £36.5m for him in 2024. For a club that usually fights to protect asset value, that’s a blunt admission: they don’t see him as central to the project anymore.
From Big Hope to Fringe Option
Zirkzee arrived with the profile of a modern centre-forward – technically smooth, good link-up play, comfortable drifting into pockets. What he never managed was a sustained run of performances to match the fee or the expectation.
Last season under Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick, his role shrank. He started just five Premier League matches, slipping down the pecking order as United’s attack evolved without him. Inside the club, the view hardened that his market value now sits closer to that £30m mark, and they’re acting accordingly.
Nine goals in 75 matches for United tell their own story. There were flashes, the odd neat touch or clever movement, but never the kind of ruthless edge required to nail down the No 9 role at Old Trafford.
Juventus Turn to Plan B – and Find a Familiar Face
Juventus’ move for Zirkzee comes after a different plan fell apart. The club had pushed to sign France international Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain, following his underwhelming loan at Tottenham last season. Talks progressed, the fit looked right, but the deal ran aground on the numbers. Juventus and PSG could not agree on the financial terms, and the move stalled.
That forced the Turin club to pivot quickly in their hunt for a new centre-forward. Zirkzee moved to the top of their list. The Sun reports that his representatives have already responded positively to Juventus’ proposal, and the Italian side now lead the race for his signature in a summer where interest in the 25-year-old is far from scarce.
For Juventus, he represents a different profile to Kolo Muani but a familiar type for Serie A: a technical forward comfortable in tight spaces, capable of knitting attacks together. For Zirkzee, the appeal is obvious.
No Stranger to Serie A – or to a Fresh Start
If he does walk through the doors at the Allianz Stadium, he will not be stepping into the unknown. Italian football is already part of his story. Zirkzee previously spent a season on loan with Parma and two seasons with Bologna, learning the rhythms of Serie A, its tactical demands, and its unforgiving scrutiny of strikers who don’t score enough.
That experience makes this potential move feel less like a gamble and more like a return to a league that understands him – and that he understands. He is open to the switch, and Juventus see a forward who could be refined rather than rebuilt.
For United, sanctioning a loan with an option to buy offers a clean route out. If Zirkzee reignites his career in Turin, Juventus can trigger the clause and United can bank a fee close to his recalibrated value. If he struggles, they avoid another permanent misstep in a transfer window where margin for error is shrinking.
The negotiations are advanced, the structure is clear, and both clubs know what they want. Now the question is simple: will Zirkzee’s next chapter unfold under the lights of the Allianz Stadium, or is there one more twist left in a career still searching for its true stage?
