Defence reshaped, Shaw missing
Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal after the comfortable Champions League win over Sabah, a 4-0 stroll that allowed Carrick to rotate heavily.
In front of him, the back four has a more familiar feel. Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire are recalled, flanking Lisandro Martinez and Patrick Dorgu. Martinez and Dorgu both played most of the 90 minutes against the Azerbaijanis, but they go again here in the heat of a derby.
Nous Mazraoui and Leny Yoro drop out after starting in midweek, while Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from back surgery.
The notable absentee is Luke Shaw. Rested on Thursday, he is the only one of the big names not to return, with rumours of an injury now effectively confirmed by his omission.
Midfield balance, attacking intent
Carrick sticks with the midfield pairing that has given United a measure of control in recent weeks. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans line up together once more in the pivot, tasked with both shielding the defence and feeding the front four.

Out wide, there is both continuity and a welcome return. Bryan Mbeumo starts on the right as Amad continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. On the left, Marcus Rashford comes back into the XI, restored after being rested in Europe and handed the responsibility of driving at City’s back line.
Through the middle, Carrick again backs Matheus Cunha as a false nine. The Brazilian’s movement and link play keep him in the side, even though Ben Sesko, who has scored in his last two games, is pushed down to the bench.
