Gjavai Zechiël Reflects on Lille Transfer That Didn't Happen
At the end of August, Gjivai Zechiël seemed to be on his way out of Rotterdam. Lille OSC had him firmly in their sights, Feyenoord braced for a serious offer, and the 22-year-old midfielder looked destined for Ligue 1.
The French club did not come window-shopping. Several bids went in, with the final proposal reportedly climbing to around €17 million including bonuses – a statement figure for a player still at the start of his top-flight career.
“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël told Voetbal International, looking back on a hectic few weeks. “At that moment, it seemed better for me from a sporting point of view.”
For a while, the move made sense. A major league, a club known for developing young talent, and the promise of a bigger stage. The path looked clear.
Then Feyenoord slammed the door.
Feyenoord dig in – and double down
Inside De Kuip, there was never much doubt. Feyenoord’s hierarchy viewed Zechiël as a cornerstone for the present and the future, not a player to cash in on late in the window. The message was simple: keep him, if at all possible.
Once it became clear Lille would not get their man, Feyenoord moved quickly to turn a collapsed transfer into a long-term commitment. At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the club had reached a verbal agreement with Zechiël over a contract extension. His current deal already runs until mid-2028, but Feyenoord want that security locked in and formalised.
“If everything goes well, that should be possible,” the right-footer said about the new agreement. No drama, no big declarations – just a calm confirmation that he expects to stay.
“I feel at home here”
Time has done the rest. What once looked like a missed chance now feels like the right call.
“Looking back, I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here,” Zechiël said. “I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club.”
He spoke like a player who has settled into more than just a role. “In the end, you grow into the team, you start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with. That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well.”
That connection has become visible every weekend.
Flying start to the season
If Feyenoord needed justification for refusing Lille’s money, Zechiël has supplied it on the pitch.
Across six competitive matches this season, the midfielder has already produced four goals and three assists – numbers that would be impressive for a forward, let alone a central presence tasked with linking play and driving the team forward.
The transfer didn’t materialise. The price tag stayed theoretical.
What remained is a 22-year-old thriving in a system built around him, a club determined to keep him, and a season that suddenly feels like it could push Gjivai Zechiël to an even higher level than any move to France might have offered.
