Manchester United's Transfer Struggles: Injury Concerns and Internal Disagreements
Manchester United’s summer rebuild is starting to look less like a masterplan and more like a tug-of-war. Targets are piling up, opinions are clashing, and while rivals move decisively, Old Trafford is wrestling with its own ideas.
Brighton midfielder deal stalls over injury
According to Fabrizio Romano, United have pulled back from a move for Brighton’s midfielder, deciding “not to proceed” after the player suffered a new injury. The club had explored the deal, but the fresh setback has turned what was once a live option into a non-starter.
“Man United are not proceeding with the deal due to his new injury. This is a problem to them,” Romano explained on his YouTube channel, adding that the player had pushed hard to join United both last summer and again in this window. The desire was there. The timing and fitness were not.
United have now shifted their attention to alternative midfield options, wary of taking on another physically uncertain asset in a squad already carrying its share of fitness concerns.
Esposito on the radar – but no rush
Further up the pitch, United and Arsenal are circling Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito. Scouts from both clubs watched the 21-year-old closely in Inter’s pre-season clash with AC Milan, with reports in The Sun claiming United have already “compiled an extensive dossier” on the forward.
That level of work usually signals intent. Not this time. United are said not to be rushing into a bid, preferring to keep their powder dry while they assess other priorities.
Arsenal’s interest is more sustained. Mikel Arteta has tracked Esposito for several months as he looks to build deeper competition behind Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz. Inter publicly insist Esposito is untouchable, yet intermediaries have floated a valuation of around £73m. At that price, any move would be a statement, not a punt.
Newcastle turn to Nmecha as United cool
One player drifting away from United’s orbit is Felix Nmecha. Sky Sports Germany report that Newcastle United are preparing an offer for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who has previously been linked with Old Trafford.
Newcastle have opened talks with Nmecha’s representatives and a formal bid is expected. Dortmund’s stance is firm: they want around €100m (£85.8m). That figure has cooled United’s interest, leaving the path clearer for the Magpies.
Nmecha is viewed on Tyneside as a potential replacement for Bruno Guimaraes, who is edging closer to a £75m move to Arsenal. If that domino falls, Newcastle will need a new heartbeat in midfield. Nmecha is high on their list.
Lewis Hall off-limits
At left-back, United have hit a wall. Sky Sports report that Newcastle have told them Lewis Hall is not for sale this summer. United admire the young full-back and were heavily linked with a move, but an enquiry nearly two weeks ago was rejected outright.
Newcastle’s message was clear: not now, not at this stage of their own project. For United, already short of reliable depth in wide defensive areas, it’s another door slammed shut.
Power struggle over third midfielder
The most intriguing battle, though, is not on the market. It’s inside Old Trafford.
Internal disagreements are said to be slowing United’s push for a third midfield signing. According to talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs, director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is pushing hard for Kone, the France international, as the next piece in the rebuild.
Sporting director Jason Wilcox is unconvinced. Jacobs reports that Wilcox, along with Michael Carrick, prefers a midfielder with Premier League experience, with names like Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos viewed more favourably.
It leaves United split on how to proceed. One camp wants a high-upside profile from abroad, another wants someone who can step into the tempo and physicality of the league from day one. Until that argument is settled, the third midfield signing stays on hold.
Elias emerges as centre-forward option
Up front, a new name has moved into focus: Elias of Shakhtar Donetsk. The Sun report that United are expected to launch an official bid, with Shakhtar valuing the striker at around £30m.
Elias’ representatives have already received “concrete signals” from interested clubs. United’s scouts have been watching him closely, with recent reports back to Old Trafford describing him as having the potential “to develop into a top-level centre-forward.”
Those inside the club also believe he would fit the tactical blueprint. Elias is said to be “highly compatible with United’s press-heavy, fast-transition system,” a key requirement as the club looks to modernise its attacking structure.
There is competition. Arsenal, AC Milan and FC Porto are also in the frame, and any hesitation from United could see them lose ground quickly.
A window defined by hesitation
So the picture is this: a Brighton midfielder abandoned over injury concerns; Pio Esposito monitored but not pursued; Felix Nmecha slipping towards Newcastle; Lewis Hall declared untouchable; a boardroom split over the next midfielder; and a £30m swing at Elias being lined up amid interest from Europe’s elite.
United know what they want their team to look like. The question is whether they can align the voices inside the club quickly enough to actually build it before the window slams shut.
