Manchester United Pursue Ismaila Sarr from Crystal Palace

Manchester United have turned their attention firmly towards Crystal Palace star Ismaila Sarr as they hunt for a versatile forward this summer – but prising him out of south London will be anything but straightforward.

Club figures view the Senegal international as close to the ideal profile: quick, direct, able to play wide or through the middle, and now proven at the very highest levels for both club and country.

United’s new attacking blueprint

INEOS’ first full transfer window at Old Trafford has come with a clear attacking brief: sign a forward who can operate across the frontline rather than a traditional No.9 fixed to one role. Inside the club, Sarr has emerged as one of the standout names who fits that brief.

He is doing so on the back of the best season of his career.

Sarr was at the heart of Crystal Palace’s remarkable UEFA Conference League triumph, scoring nine goals in the competition and walking away with the Player of the Season award. He then carried that form into the Premier League, adding nine more league goals to finish with 20 in all competitions.

Those numbers, and the manner in which he produced them, have sharpened United’s focus.

TEAMtalk understands United have now made contact with Sarr’s representatives to formally register their interest and gather detailed information on his situation. The 28-year-old had already been tracked before the World Cup in North America, but his performances there only pushed him higher up the list.

World Cup showcase and a new dimension

Senegal’s exit against Belgium on Wednesday – surrendering a 2-0 lead in the final five minutes – ended Sarr’s tournament in brutal fashion. His individual contribution, though, was impossible to ignore.

Four goals. One assist. A constant threat on the global stage.

Crucially for United’s recruitment team, he showed he can lead the line as a central striker as well as attack from wide areas. That versatility has pushed INEOS to step up their interest, even with full recognition that any deal would be expensive.

Palace know exactly what they have. And they will charge accordingly.

Price rising in south London

Sarr only arrived at Selhurst Park in 2024 for a fee of under £15 million, but his explosive first full season has transformed his valuation. TEAMtalk understands Palace would expect to more than triple that initial outlay before they even consider serious offers.

He is also under contract for another three years, which only strengthens the Eagles’ hand as negotiations loom.

New Palace boss Pierre Sage inherits a player who has just delivered a European trophy, a standout domestic campaign and a statement World Cup. Any manager in that position would be reluctant to lose such a talisman, and it would be no surprise if Sage makes it clear he wants Sarr at the centre of his plans.

Palace are not the only club watching developments. Italian giants Juventus are also monitoring Sarr closely after tracking his progress throughout last season, adding another layer of competition – and leverage – to any potential talks.

Zirkzee expected to go, Rashford unresolved

United’s interest in Sarr sits inside a wider attacking reshuffle.

The club still intend to bring in at least two new midfielders, but a flexible forward remains high on the agenda for this window. That need grows as the futures of current attackers move into focus.

Joshua Zirkzee is expected to leave this summer, while Marcus Rashford’s situation remains up in the air. As previously revealed, there is now a very real possibility Rashford could end up back at Old Trafford if a permanent move away cannot be agreed, even though the club’s preference is still to secure his departure.

United are not waiting on that to make decisions. They continue to work through a list of attacking targets.

West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville is another name under close consideration after an impressive World Cup of his own, as reported on June 17. Yet Sarr, with his blend of European pedigree, Premier League output and international form, may now have edged ahead of the Dutchman on United’s internal wishlist.

Ambition meets austerity at Old Trafford

All of this plays out against a backdrop of tighter financial control under Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Spending and wages are under stricter scrutiny, and that stance has already had consequences.

United ultimately missed out on Mateus Fernandes, with fresh details emerging over the offer they made and why it fell short.

Now they face a familiar dilemma: pay a premium for a player entering his peak years, in a seller’s market, or walk away and risk watching him light up another club’s attack.

For Sarr, this summer could define the next phase of his career. For United, it may reveal just how bold – or restrained – the new regime is prepared to be.
