Manchester United Signs Young Goalkeeper Kit Margetson
Manchester United have added another young goalkeeper to their ranks, confirming the signing of Welsh prospect Kit Margetson as the club also intensifies its push for Roma midfielder Manu Kone.
United move for Margetson
Margetson, 19, joins United after the expiry of his contract at Swansea City, with the Premier League club agreeing a compensation package for a player the Welsh side developed from Under-15 level through to the senior setup.
The Wales Under-21 international is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who now serves as Wales’ goalkeeping coach. Kit spent last season on loan at Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads, where he produced 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances and played a central role in their qualification for European competition.
United confirmed the deal in a statement, describing Margetson as an “exciting young goalkeeper” and noting his progression through Swansea’s academy and breakthrough into senior football in Wales’ top flight. He made his Wales Under-21 debut against Belarus in March, adding international pedigree to his club form.
Swansea, who are entitled to remuneration for his development, underlined his importance to their setup in their own announcement, highlighting that he had been part of the club since Under-15 level, featured regularly around the senior squad and was included in a first-team matchday squad against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 season.
Margetson becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, following the free transfer signing of Karl Darlow after his departure from Leeds United. The move underlines United’s clear attempt to deepen competition and succession planning in the goalkeeping department, with a blend of experience and emerging talent now in place.
Midfield rebuild targets Kone
While the goalkeeping group takes shape, United’s recruitment drive in midfield is gathering pace.
After bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the club is pushing for a third addition in the middle of the pitch, with Manu Kone emerging as a leading target. According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, United have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with the Roma midfielder, who caught the eye with France at the World Cup.
The report claims United are ready to table an offer worth close to €50 million (£42.7m) for Kone. The race, though, is far from straightforward. Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are all credited with strong interest, setting up a multi-club battle for his signature.
United’s hierarchy have already moved decisively in several areas of the squad this summer. The next question is whether they can now win a high-stakes contest for Kone and complete a midfield reshaping that would change the look – and tempo – of their season.
