Manchester United Pursues Youri Tielemans After Ederson Deal Falls Through
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has taken another sharp turn. With the Ederson move dead and Andrey Santos lined up, the club are now accelerating towards Youri Tielemans, with talks described as “advanced” for the Aston Villa midfielder.
The shift is sudden, but not accidental. United want two, possibly three midfielders this summer, and the Ederson saga has clearly hardened their stance on risk.
Ederson deal scrapped after medical doubts
For weeks, United had pushed the Ederson transfer as a done deal. Atalanta believed it too. The Brazilian, fresh from a World Cup with Brazil and a strong season in Serie A, was widely reported as “100 per cent confirmed” in June.
Then came the medical.
After a series of tests, United backed away. Atalanta were formally told the deal was off, with the communication reaching the Italian club this week. From their side, the message is unequivocal: they insist Ederson is fully fit and ready to play, as he has been for club and country. United, though, chose caution, deciding against proceeding after “several sessions of medical tests”.
Atalanta are prepared to welcome him back. Ederson has a year left on his contract and returns to Bergamo rather than Old Trafford, leaving United’s recruitment team to pivot quickly.
Tielemans emerges as priority target
That pivot has led them to a familiar Premier League name. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, United are now in advanced talks to sign Belgium international Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
United have “identified an opportunity” to land the 29-year-old, and despite interest from elsewhere, Tielemans is understood to favour a move to Old Trafford. Contact between all parties is ongoing as they work to finalise the transfer.
On the face of it, the move is a surprise. Villa finished just one place below United last season and are building aggressively under Unai Emery. Yet Tielemans offers something Erik ten Hag’s midfield badly needs: top-flight experience, game management, and a proven passing range in tight games where United often lose control.
A £35m clause changes everything
The deal’s momentum owes plenty to a key detail. As reported by Daily Telegraph journalist John Percy, Tielemans has a £35m release clause in his Villa contract, and a transfer to United is now regarded as “very likely”.
At that price, Tielemans represents a relatively low-risk, high-experience option in a market where elite midfielders routinely cost double or triple that figure. Villa, for their part, are already deep into plans for life after him, closing in on Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in what is expected to be a club-record deal.
United’s broader summer plan
Tielemans would not be the only new face in United’s engine room. The club have been working on a deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, who is expected to become their first signing of the summer. Between Santos’ potential and Tielemans’ know-how, United are trying to blend youth and experience in an area that has too often looked unbalanced.
The recruitment brief stretches beyond midfield. At least one full-back and a left-winger are also on the list as United attempt to reshape a squad that has underperformed domestically and in Europe.
The pressure now is on United to close. They have already walked away from one “done” deal in Ederson. With a release clause on the table and the player leaning towards Old Trafford, there will be far less room for hesitation with Tielemans.
