Manchester United have triggered a £35million release clause to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, talkSPORT understands, in a move that underlines a ruthless reshaping of Michael Carrick’s midfield.
The deal, prised open by that clause, brings one of the Premier League’s most reliable operators to Old Trafford. Tielemans, 29, still had two years left on his Villa contract, yet United moved decisively once it became clear he was open to a new challenge and Villa were braced for a fight they were unlikely to win.
Tielemans the Casemiro successor
This is not a luxury signing. It is a structural one.
With Casemiro poised to join Inter Miami after his exit from Old Trafford, United needed a midfielder who could step straight into the chaos of a Premier League season and bring order. Tielemans fits that brief. He has 244 Premier League appearances across his time at Leicester City and Aston Villa, a body of work that explains why United were prepared to meet the clause rather than haggle.
At Villa, he did far more than just keep things ticking over. He was named the club’s 2024/25 Player of the Season and played a central role in their Europa League triumph last term, a campaign that showcased his blend of control, intelligence and timing in big moments.
Villa did not simply wave him out of the door. They pushed to keep him, but the pull of a fresh challenge – and United’s need for a ready-made leader in midfield – shifted the balance.
A seasoned international arrives
Tielemans does not arrive as a prospect. He arrives as a captain.
With 90 caps for Belgium, he has long been a mainstay of his national team and even wore the armband at the World Cup. He featured in every game of Belgium’s run to the quarter-finals, scoring twice in a comeback win over Senegal that underlined his knack for turning matches from deep.
His tournament ended in frustration. An apparent hamstring injury in the warm-up kept him out of the 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Spain. But that setback did little to alter how he is viewed: a seasoned, trusted midfielder who handles pressure rather than shrinks from it.
That is precisely the profile United have been short of in the middle of the pitch.
Andrey Santos next in line
Tielemans is unlikely to be the only new face in United’s engine room.
United are also set to complete the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a £50m move, a deal that points to a deliberate blend of experience and youth at the heart of Carrick’s rebuild. Tielemans brings the miles on the clock; Santos, the upside.
If both arrive as expected, United’s midfield will look very different by the time the new season kicks off – and far less dependent on a single destroyer in the Casemiro mould.
Ederson deal stalls under the microscope

United have agreed a £38.8m fee with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, yet as things stand the transfer is off. Not collapsed, not forgotten – simply held at arm’s length.
Carrick’s staff want extensive medical checks before any final decision is made, and the club is refusing to be rushed. Clarity is expected soon, but for now Ederson remains an Atalanta player, even though the Italian club know they must cash in this summer to avoid the risk of losing him for nothing in 2027.
Had it gone through, Ederson would have signed a four-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. The framework is there. The green light is not.
Quiet progress in goal
While the headline business circles the midfield, United have quietly ticked off a key squad role.
A deal for goalkeeper Karl Darlow is done, even if the club has yet to officially unveil any of their new arrivals. Darlow will join from Leeds United on a three-year contract with the option of an extra year, brought in as a homegrown option to replace Altay Bayindir and operate as back-up to Senne Lammens.
It is the kind of move that rarely dominates back pages but often proves crucial across a long season.
United have not yet held up a new signing scarf for the cameras. The paperwork, though, tells a different story. A new midfield is taking shape – and with Tielemans at its core, the questions now turn to how quickly Carrick can turn fresh pieces into a functioning, ruthless unit.
