Manchester United's Pursuit of Aurélien Tchouaméni: A Tactical Necessity

Manchester United refuse to let Aurélien Tchouaméni go. Not in their plans, anyway.

Knocked back once already this summer, United have returned to Real Madrid to ask again about the French midfielder, who sits near the top of their shortlist as they search for a specialist replacement for Casemiro, now in MLS with Inter Miami.

For months, the expectation around Madrid was clear. Tchouaméni would stay. Approaches in the winter window went nowhere. Early enquiries this summer met the same response. He was even understood to be close to extending his contract, a sign of how firmly he was embedded in Real’s long-term plans.

United have pushed on regardless. Their need is obvious. Casemiro’s departure has ripped out the natural anchor from the centre of the pitch, leaving a tactical hole that the club’s current business has not yet filled.

André Santos and Youri Tielemans bring craft, forward thrust, passing between the lines. They tilt the midfield towards attack. What United still lack is a pure shield: someone to sit, destroy, recycle, and give structure to a side that has often looked stretched in transition.

Tchouaméni’s profile fits that brief almost perfectly. Young, physically dominant, tactically disciplined, comfortable building from deep and policing the space in front of the back line – he offers exactly the balance United’s recruitment department has been chasing.

That is the football case. The political one is harder.

José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, a clear indication that Real Madrid see him as part of their core rather than a saleable asset. Any attempt to prise him away now means not just meeting Madrid’s valuation, but convincing a club and a coach who have already pencilled him into their future.

United have asked the question again. The answer, for now, still leans towards “no”.

The real issue is whether their need – urgent, structural, impossible to ignore – can force Madrid to even consider turning that into a “maybe” before this window closes.
