Manchester United’s summer has finally found its edge. And Michael Carrick is not done yet.
With Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans already through the door, United have started to reshape a midfield stripped of Casemiro’s presence. Those two signings add craft and energy, but inside Carrick’s planning there is a clear, unresolved priority: a dominant holding midfielder who can anchor a title-chasing side and carry the weight of Champions League nights.
At the top of that list, and it has been there for a long time, sits one name: Aurelien Tchouameni.
A long-term target, a shifting landscape
United have admired the Real Madrid midfielder for years, but admiration has never been enough. Madrid have treated Tchouameni as non-negotiable, a cornerstone of their next great midfield. Any enquiry hit the same wall: not for sale.
Now, the picture in Spain is starting to move.
Real Madrid are expecting to bring in Manchester City’s Rodri, the World Cup Golden Ball winner and the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side. The Spain captain, fresh from leading La Roja to the ultimate prize, is understood to be keen on a return home. His journey from Atletico Madrid to Villarreal and then City has never dulled his appeal in the Spanish capital, and any old Atletico ties are unlikely to stand in the way.
If that transfer lands, it will send a shockwave through two of Europe’s giants.
For City, it would mean losing arguably their most important player, a generational pivot who has defined their control of games. For United, it opens a door that has been bolted shut for far too long.
Rodri’s arrival at the Bernabeu would crowd an already elite midfield. Tchouameni, suddenly, might see his minutes squeezed. And Madrid, according to Simply Utd, are now “open to a sale” – though only at the right price, a figure expected to be eye-watering.
United have sensed the change and moved. Fresh contact has been made over a deal for Tchouameni, sounding out whether Madrid’s stance has softened enough to turn a fantasy into a negotiation.
There is also a watching brief on Eduardo Camavinga, another young midfielder of enormous talent. For now, that interest sits in the realm of possibility rather than concrete talks, with suggestions that Madrid might be more open to losing him this summer still firmly in speculative territory.
The dream signing versus harsh reality
Inside Old Trafford, the hierarchy know exactly what Tchouameni would represent: a statement. A player in his prime years, proven at the highest level, sliding straight into the role Casemiro vacated and instantly narrowing the gap to Arsenal and Manchester City.
Yet the dream keeps colliding with the numbers.

The stance, though, comes with a caveat. Those inside the club still see Tchouameni as a “dream signing” and would be ready to act if the signals from Madrid changed on price. United will not walk away from the idea; they will simply not chase it at any cost.
So Carrick waits, plans and pushes.
His squad has been strengthened, but he knows the standard. Arsenal and City are not pausing to admire anyone else’s rebuild. United must close the gap, not talk about it. The signing of a true holding midfielder – whether Tchouameni or someone else – could decide how close they get to the Premier League’s summit and how far they travel in Europe.
