Manchester United vs PSG: A Crucial Pre-Season Test in Gothenburg

Benjamin Sesko is out injured, as are Manuel Ugarte, Karl Darlow and Matthijs de Ligt, while Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha are sidelined through illness. It is a reminder that this is still pre-season, still a patchwork, however glossy the fixture list looks.
Up front, Bryan Mbeumo has earned another start. Two goals against Atletico Madrid sharpened his case, and Carrick is unlikely to break that rhythm now. There will be no second senior outing, however, for 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who drops out after his eye-catching debut last weekend.
PSG searching for sharpness
On the other side, PSG arrive with more questions than answers. The Mallorca defeat exposed rust, but also gave Luis Enrique a chance to look closely at his academy talent. Illia Zabarnyi and Lucas Beraldo both completed the full 90 minutes, valuable minutes in the legs, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia made his return and will be watched closely again.
The cavalry is starting to reassemble. Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves and Vitinha have resumed training and could be involved in Gothenburg. Their presence alone would stiffen a side that looked soft in Spain. Achraf Hakimi, though, remains a doubt, and his absence on the right would again blunt PSG’s usual thrust from deep.
Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele are also edging back towards action after their World Cup exertions. Whether today comes too soon for any of them will be part of Luis Enrique’s risk calculus. Throw them in and chase rhythm? Or hold them back with the Super Cup looming?
A friendly with an edge
Strip away the “pre-season” label and there is something more serious beneath. United, with all their absentees, still sense an opportunity. PSG are not at full strength. Their preparations have been short, their first performance poor. The odds reflect it: United are favourites, priced at 4/5, with PSG out at 5/2 and the draw at 17/5.
United’s record against PSG is tight – two wins to the French club’s three, no draws – but this is a different kind of meeting. No Champions League jeopardy, no away-goals tension. Instead, a chance to test patterns, partnerships and temperament against elite opposition without the consequences of a bad night in Europe.
Carrick will want the same intensity that suffocated Atletico. Aggressive pressing, sharp transitions, and Mbeumo stretching the line. The introduction of Tielemans should give United a more controlled route through midfield, especially if he dovetails quickly with Fernandes.
For PSG, the demand is simple: respond. The Mallorca defeat cannot become a pattern. Luis Enrique needs to see defensive organisation around Zabarnyi and Beraldo, and a more coherent attacking structure with Kvaratskhelia knitting moves together and, if involved, Vitinha dictating tempo.
Prediction: United to lean into their momentum
Form in July and August rarely survives the first real storm of a season, but it can build belief. United have that right now. PSG do not.
With more minutes in the legs, a clearer sense of direction and a crowd that will lean their way, United should back themselves to edge it. The expectation is a competitive game, a few defensive lapses on both sides, and a decisive moment from a player in red rather than blue.
