Manchester United Eye Eduardo Camavinga Transfer After Mourinho's Verdict
Manchester United have been handed their clearest signal yet that a move for Eduardo Camavinga is there to be made.
The message has come not from Old Trafford, but from Valdebebas.
Mourinho’s verdict changes the picture
Jose Mourinho, newly installed at Real Madrid, has held direct talks with Camavinga and, according to Spanish journalist Sergio Valentin, delivered the kind of blunt assessment that tends to shape careers.
The midfielder, twice a LaLiga winner and twice a Champions League winner with Madrid, has been told he faces “a very tough time getting minutes” next season. Mourinho, Valentin reports, made it clear this was not a snap judgement after a few training sessions. He arrived with this view already formed.
Madrid, on that basis, are now actively looking at options to transfer the 21-year-old. Camavinga, for the moment, is resisting. His stance is simple: he does not want to leave the Bernabeu.
The club’s stance is just as clear: they do.
United’s long courtship
This is exactly the opening Manchester United have been waiting for.
Back on May 15, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that United had identified Camavinga as a summer target and that Madrid were open to a sale. The Frenchman’s omission from the France squad for the 2026 World Cup only strengthened the sense that his stock at international and club level had dipped, even if his talent remains unquestioned.
United moved early in the window, speaking to Camavinga’s representatives while sounding out Madrid’s position. At that stage, the Spanish giants were prepared to listen. Now, according to Valentin, they are pushing.
In the meantime, INEOS have not stood still. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea. Youri Tielemans has come in from Aston Villa. Two midfielders through the door, but the plan has always been for three. A deeper, more complete rebuild of the centre of the pitch.
Camavinga sits at the top end of that wish list.
Mixed signals from the player
Last week, Fabrizio Romano reported that United had held “conversations” with Camavinga’s camp, but the player’s preference remained to stay and fight for his place in Madrid. Mourinho was yet to sit down with him. That conversation, Romano said, would shape the final decision.
Now it has taken place, the fault lines are obvious.
Valentin, who has a sizeable following on X, detailed Mourinho’s message on Friday night. The Portuguese has been “direct” with Camavinga. The road to regular football at Madrid will be steep. The club, in parallel, are “looking for options” to move him on, even as he tells them he does not want to go.
For United, the contradiction is an opportunity. When Madrid decide a player is for sale, history shows the end result is usually the same, no matter how strong the initial resistance from the dressing room.
A shrinking role at the Bernabeu
Camavinga’s situation is not helped by the broader context. He has battled injury problems over the last two seasons, losing rhythm at key points in campaigns where competition for places has only intensified.
Now, with Madrid planning a move for Rodri, the Frenchman’s route back to the heart of the team narrows even further. The pecking order in midfield is already brutal. Add one of the best holding midfielders in the world to that mix and the margins become even thinner.
For a player of Camavinga’s age, with his résumé, sporadic minutes and an undefined role are not a long-term solution. Mourinho knows it. Madrid’s hierarchy knows it. United, watching from a distance, know it too.
Time for United to move
The latest development leaves the ball squarely in United’s court. The encouragement could hardly be stronger: a world-class prospect, available because his club are ready to sell and his manager does not see him as central to his plans.
The next step is no longer talking to agents. It is picking up the phone to Madrid.
