Manchester United Eye Crysencio Summerville as Left Flank Solution
Manchester United have turned their attention to Crysencio Summerville as a leading solution for their left flank – and, crucially, they look to have a clear run at him.
The West Ham United winger, one of the few bright sparks in a grim relegation campaign at the London Stadium, is firmly on United’s radar, with Liverpool stepping away from the race and rival options either too expensive or too raw.
United circle as market opens up
Summerville finished last season with seven goals and five assists in 34 appearances for West Ham, numbers that stood out in a side sliding into the Championship. Relegation has made his departure almost inevitable. West Ham know it, and so do the clubs watching.
Manchester United are among those ready to move. Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas describes Summerville as “emerging as a top left-wing target” for the Old Trafford hierarchy this summer, with the 24-year-old viewed as a serious, front-line option rather than a speculative punt.
United’s recruitment team, now operating under the INEOS structure, are prioritising midfield reinforcements, but the need for a new left-sided attacker has been firmly logged. Within that shortlist, Summerville is understood to be a leading candidate.
They are not short of alternatives. Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa, Iliman Ndiaye at Everton and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo have all been admired and assessed. Yet each comes with a complication. Rogers and Ndiaye would require “huge money”, with Villa and Everton determined to keep key men. Fernandez-Pardo has clear potential but lacks Premier League experience.
Summerville does not. That matters.
World Cup reminder of his ceiling
While his club season ended in disappointment, his World Cup campaign with the Netherlands told a different story. Across four matches, he produced two goals and two assists, injecting pace and directness into a Dutch side that unexpectedly fell to Morocco in the last 32.
It was a reminder of what he looks like in a functioning team, on a big stage, with the shackles off. That sort of tournament performance tends to lodge in the minds of recruitment departments. At Old Trafford, it has.
West Ham are expected to demand around £50 million for the winger. In a market where Rogers could cost north of £80m – and potentially push towards £100m – Summerville’s price tag sits in a more palatable bracket for a player already proven in England’s top flight.
Liverpool step back, United step forward
Liverpool had explored a move earlier in the year, as revealed by The Athletic on June 23, but their interest has since cooled. That shift has altered the landscape.
With Liverpool out of the picture, United find themselves in a strong position. Arsenal are monitoring the situation, but for now it is United who appear closest to making a decisive move.
The club’s intent has been underlined by Old Trafford reporter Laurie Whitwell, who confirmed that Summerville and Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall are both players of interest to INEOS as they reshape the squad.
Rashford question looms large
There is, however, a major variable: Marcus Rashford.
Sky Sports report that any push for Summerville could hinge on Rashford’s future role. The England international is due back at Carrington after the World Cup, with Barcelona’s £26m option to buy now expired.
Rashford would ideally like a return to Barcelona, but he is also open to being reintegrated into the United squad under Michael Carrick. That leaves a decision squarely on the manager’s desk.
If Carrick chooses to hand Rashford a central role on the left, the urgency for Summerville diminishes. If doubts remain over Rashford’s long-term fit or consistency, the case for spending £50m on a new left winger strengthens quickly.
United at a crossroads on the flank
What is clear is that United want a sharper, more reliable threat from that side of the pitch. Summerville offers pace, end product and a track record of delivering in difficult circumstances. He has carried responsibility in a struggling team and shone on the international stage.
With Liverpool stepping back, Arsenal only watching, and rival targets either overpriced or untested, the path is there for United.
Now it comes down to one choice: build again around Marcus Rashford, or pivot to a new era on the left with Crysencio Summerville.
