Barcelona's Standoff Over Julián Álvarez as Raphinha Shines
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are still staring each other down over Julián Álvarez. No progress, no compromise, just a transfer standoff that refuses to move.
Barça want the Argentine forward and have made that perfectly clear. Atletico, for now, won’t even entertain a conversation. The lines are drawn.
Yet inside the Camp Nou offices, the mood is far from desperate. According to Spanish newspaper El País, Raphinha is steadily justifying the conviction of coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco. Long before the window heated up, the pair had agreed on a simple rule: if neither Álvarez nor Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez could be prised away, there was no point chasing other strikers. No one on the market, they felt, would upgrade what they already had.
They tried anyway. They pushed hard for Álvarez and are still doing so, a pursuit that has reportedly irritated Atletico’s hierarchy. Deco also sounded out Inter over Lautaro, but that enquiry ended quickly. The response from Milan was enough to convince him there was no realistic deal to be made there.
So Flick and Deco turned back to what was in front of them. And Raphinha answered.
Thrown in as an out-and-out centre-forward in the league opener against Elche, the Brazilian scored twice. Given the role again against Athletic Bilbao, he found the net once more. Two games, three goals, and suddenly the “we don’t need another striker” stance looks less like spin and more like a plan.
Flick's Position on Raphinha
Flick made his position clear when asked about Raphinha’s role. “I do not care in which position Raphinha plays, what matters to me is what he shows on the pitch. The fans connect with him and with the team. We have a great atmosphere, and that is the most important thing. What matters is how the press begins.”
The message was obvious: systems and labels can wait; output and energy cannot.
Flick on Álvarez
On Álvarez, though, Flick shut the door firmly. “I do not want to comment on matters of this kind. We won our second match in a row, and that is what matters to me.” Barcelona might not be giving up behind the scenes, but the coach is keeping the conversation on the pitch.
All signs point to Álvarez staying out of Barcelona’s reach, at least for this summer. Without him, the club’s standout incoming deal remains Rodri, who was warmly applauded by the Camp Nou crowd, El País reported.
The saga with Atletico rumbles on, but as long as Raphinha keeps scoring through the middle and the wins keep stacking up, the real question is shifting: do Barcelona truly need the striker they’re fighting for, or have they already found one in-house?
