Lucas Digne's PSG Return Stalls Amid Early Struggles
Lucas Digne’s return to the Parc des Princes has stalled before it ever really began.
Left out of Paris Saint-Germain’s squad for Friday night’s meeting with Monaco, the 33-year-old has hit an early wall under Luis Enrique, despite signing a long-term deal until 2029 after arriving from Aston Villa in the summer.
This is no fitness issue, no quiet knock in training. L’Equipe report the decision is rooted purely in “sporting reasons” after a flat start to his second spell in Paris, and Enrique has wasted little time in making his stance clear.
Digne’s bid to relaunch his PSG career was already wobbling on opening weekend. He watched the Ligue 1 curtain-raiser against Rennes from the bench and never got on the pitch. For a player returning with the expectation of real minutes, that was the first warning sign.
His chance finally came a week later against Lille. It was hardly a dream scenario. Thrown on in the 71st minute with PSG 2-0 down, he entered a game drifting away from the champions. The late drama belonged to the team, not to him. PSG struck in the first and fifth minutes of stoppage time to snatch a point, but Digne’s cameo did little to shift the internal debate over his role.
Inside the coaching staff, those brief minutes seem to have carried weight. Their evaluation of his impact has led to something far more brutal this week: total exclusion from the matchday squad. For a new signing, and a returning one at that, it is a stark message about where he currently stands.
Timing of the Decision
The timing makes the call even more striking.
PSG are in the middle of a mini-crisis at left-back. Nuno Mendes, the undisputed starter, is suspended domestically after his straight red card against Lens in the Trophee des Champions before the season kicked off. That ban covers the first three league games, a stretch that looked tailor-made for Digne to step in, settle, and convince.
The door was open. Mendes out, a familiar stadium, a manager who prizes tactical discipline. On paper, it was the perfect window for Digne to reclaim a starting berth and reconnect with a fanbase that once saw him as part of the club’s future.
Instead, Enrique has turned elsewhere. He has pushed versatile centre-backs Lucas Beraldo and Lucas Hernandez into the left-back role, preferring their profile and reliability over a specialist full-back still trying to find his rhythm.
For Digne, the message is blunt. At a time when opportunity should have been knocking, it has been slammed shut.
