Julen Lopetegui's Act of Contrition for Injured Player
Julen Lopetegui did not spend the build‑up to Qatar’s final Group A game talking about tactics or shape. Instead, the national coach found himself explaining an act of contrition.
Assim Madibo, sent off in last week’s 6-0 hammering by Canada after a tackle that left Ismael Kone with a broken leg, has travelled to Vancouver on the eve of Qatar’s meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina to visit the midfielder he accidentally injured. Kone, now facing at least five months out and a long road back with Sassuolo in Serie A, has become the human face of an incident that visibly shattered Madibo.
“It has been very tough for him,” Lopetegui said on Tuesday, describing a player still haunted by the challenge. Madibo left the pitch in pieces that night; days later, the remorse has not shifted. The coach stressed again that the collision was “a very clear accident” and that his midfielder had been “very, very affected” by the injury. The visit, with Qatar’s blessing, was his attempt to show it.
Madibo will watch Wednesday’s match in Seattle from afar, suspended after the red card that changed the tone of Qatar’s tournament. Homam Ahmed is also banned after his own dismissal in the same bruising defeat. Lopetegui must reconfigure without two starters, but the story around his team has already moved beyond the white lines.
“We wish him [Kone] all the best to recover as soon as possible,” Lopetegui added. Qatar’s World Cup will soon be over; for Kone, the real work is only just beginning.
