Loïs Openda Joins Olympique Lyonnais on Loan

Loïs Openda is on the move again. After just one season in Turin, the Belgian forward is set to swap Juventus for Olympique Lyonnais, with a loan deal for the 2026-27 campaign all but lined up and signed off by multiple top-tier outlets.

This is no complicated, performance-laden agreement. No buy option, no obligation, no hidden clauses waiting to be triggered in May. Lyon are taking Openda on a straight loan, a clean one-season hit designed to inject pace and direct running into Paulo Fonseca’s attack. For that privilege, the French club will pay Juventus around €3m.

The numbers matter here, but the structure matters more. Juventus had been wrestling with the cost of Openda’s wages, and early in the week there were whispers that the Italians might need to subsidise part of his salary just to move him on. That prospect has now been swept off the table. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Lyon will cover his salary in full.

For Juve, it’s tidy business. They bank a loan fee, clear a full wage packet, and keep the player’s long-term rights intact. For Lyon, it’s a calculated gamble on a forward whose profile fits Fonseca’s front-foot football: aggressive runs, vertical threat, a willingness to stretch defences.

Openda arrived in Serie A with expectations of becoming a key piece in Turin, but one season has proved enough for all parties to accept a reset. A fresh league, a new coach, and a club that has long thrived on rehabilitating and relaunching talented attackers.

The move won’t change Juventus’ balance sheet overnight, and it won’t lock in Openda’s future beyond next season. It does something else, though. It hands Lyon a proven top-level runner in behind, fully financed on their side, with the freedom to see if he can become the spearhead of Fonseca’s next project.

One year. One loan. No safety net of a purchase clause. Openda now has a season in Ligue 1 to turn a temporary escape into a long-term argument about where he truly belongs.
