Liverpool Reject Bayern's Pursuit of Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have drawn a hard line over Rio Ngumoha – and Bayern Munich have just walked straight into it.

On Friday, reports in England and Germany painted a clear picture: Bayern identified the 17-year-old as a priority target for the left flank, pushed hard, even spoke to the player. Liverpool’s response? Absolutely not.

Bayern’s secret target brought into the light

The story first broke into the open when David Ornstein revealed that Bayern were exploring a move for Ngumoha, one of the standout teenage prospects in the Premier League system and a player Liverpool rate enormously.

Ornstein reported that the German giants see the Liverpool winger as their primary option for the left side. Ngumoha was aware of the interest, but there had been no formal contact between the clubs. Liverpool, he added, were insistent: the youngster is not for sale, and the club intend to strengthen their attack, not strip it back.

That was only the start.

From Germany, Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg then lifted the lid on how far Bayern had gone. Ngumoha, he revealed, had been a “secret candidate” in negotiations for weeks. A full verbal agreement between Bayern and the player’s camp was in place by Tuesday, 26 May, with the teenager lined up as an “absolute priority” back-up option to Luis Díaz, alongside the club’s ongoing pursuit of Anthony Gordon.

Vincent Kompany had even personally spoken with Ngumoha and given the green light for the deal. Bayern thought they were closing in.

Then the door slammed shut.

Plettenberg reported that the move “collapsed” on Thursday, at least for now, with Bayern’s focus potentially turning to other targets such as Brown and Saibari if club-to-club agreements can be reached.

FSG’s stance: project player, not trade asset

The collapse was no mystery for long.

Fabrizio Romano, who has tracked Liverpool’s transfer strategy closely, spelled out the position from Anfield in no uncertain terms. Liverpool, he said, have viewed Ngumoha as “untouchable” not just this week, but for months.

Inside the club, the 17-year-old is seen as a crucial piece of the future, a winger to build around rather than cash in on. Fenway Sports Group have sanctioned major outgoings in the past when the timing and price were right, but this is different. This is about protection, not profit.

No negotiation. No compromise. No exit.

For Bayern, the message is blunt: if they want to reshape their attack under Kompany, they will have to do it without prising one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects out of Merseyside.

Liverpool have made their bet. Ngumoha is part of the next era, not someone else’s rebuilding plan.
