Carlos Baleba’s Manchester United Debut Delayed by Injury
Carlos Baleba’s Manchester United debut is on hold before it has even begun.
The £70 million signing will be sidelined for around three weeks with an ankle injury, Michael Carrick has confirmed, delaying the first glimpse of a player the club believes can reshape their midfield.
New signing, same wait
Baleba, 22, completed his move from Brighton on Tuesday, following Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans through the door in a summer rebuild in the middle of the pitch. United director of football Jason Wilcox has already hailed him as “an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further”.
Supporters will have to be patient.
The Cameroon international arrived carrying an ankle problem that had already kept him out of Brighton’s Conference League fixtures and their Premier League opener. It will also rule him out of Sunday’s Premier League home game against promoted Ipswich and a clutch of matches beyond that.
"He's got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks," Carrick said. "We'll see but we knew that before, so it's no major issue but it'll be great to have him back when we can."
Carrick’s estimate points towards a possible debut in a fixture loaded with narrative: against Brighton, the club Baleba has just left.
United face Albion at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup before travelling to Fulham on September 20, their final outing before they host Tottenham after the international break on October 10. Somewhere in that run, if recovery goes to plan, Baleba should finally step onto the pitch in red.
Injury picture and returning faces
Baleba is not alone in the treatment room.
Asked whether the midfielder and Amad Diallo could be back before the three-week international break, Carrick refused to circle a date on the calendar.
"It's obviously new, the break to deal with, but we'll wait and see," he said. "We're hopeful but I don't want to put any deadlines on it just yet."
"Amad won't be involved this week. He'll be out for a little bit longer. Mase (Mason Mount) is back around the group, which was great. Trained this week, so that's a big positive for us."
Mount’s return at least gives Carrick another option as he tries to steady a campaign that has started badly.
Baleba’s role in the rebuild
Inside the club, the excitement around Baleba is clear. Carrick did little to hide it.
"We're delighted to have Carlos," he said. "I think huge potential, massive potential. I think he's a really exciting signing for us.
"I think the quality that he has, the attributes that he has that offsets a little bit of the balance of the group that we've got. Different strengths, different combinations.
"So, for us to have that, absolutely delighted to have him. I think there's so much more to come from him as well, which with the player that he already is with that little bit more to come is exciting for us."
United see him as a different profile to what they already have: power, range, and a blend of defensive work and forward thrust that can alter the chemistry of the midfield. For now, all of that lives in theory and training plans rather than on the grass at Old Trafford.
Response required after nightmare start
Theory won’t fix the league table. United head into the weekend needing a reaction.
Last week’s 2-0 defeat at play-off winners Hull was a jolt, the kind of flat opening-day performance that drags questions to the surface immediately. Carrick turned to his big names at half-time, sending on Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo after giving them extended rest following the World Cup.
The message now is simple: no excuses, no hiding behind absentees.
"We've got a squad to choose from. We've got a good squad and we could pick a variety kind of combinations within the team," Carrick said. "We'll pick a team for the weekend but, yeah, certainly the boys are massively in contention."
Baleba will watch that response from the stands, his debut pushed back by a knock the club insist is minor. The wait only sharpens the intrigue. When he is finally fit, does he simply add to the mix, or does he become the pivot around which this new United midfield turns?
