Chelsea have ripped up their goalkeeping script in the final days of the window, agreeing a £7.5m fee with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez as doubts over Robert Sanchez finally harden into action.
The Argentina international, 33, is set to travel to London for a medical after BBC Sport revealed the deal, with Chelsea framing the move as one designed to “strengthen the goalkeeping group at Stamford Bridge.” The wording is diplomatic. The timing is not.
For most of the summer, senior figures at the club backed Sanchez as No 1. They were prepared to ride out the bumps. Then came Monday night.
Sanchez errors force Chelsea’s hand
Chelsea beat Fulham 3-2, but inside the club the post-match discussion did not centre on the three points. It circled around Sanchez.
He allowed a Josh King effort to squeeze through his hands at the near post, then spilled another shot into a dangerous area after the break, gifting Gonzalo Garcia a goal. Chelsea escaped with the win. Sanchez did not escape scrutiny.
Those in charge, BBC Sport reported, had been “keen to back Sanchez but have opted to move for Martinez days before the transfer deadline.” The shift is stark. Concerns that had been simmering now have a £7.5m price tag attached.
Martinez offers something very different. A World Cup winner with a reputation for edge, presence and resilience, he arrives as an experienced, confrontational figure in a department that has looked uncertain for too long.
Villa’s succession plan opens the door
Aston Villa’s stance has been shaped by their own planning. They have already moved to bring in Zion Suzuki from Parma for around £30m, a deal that gave them room to negotiate over Martinez.
Once that door opened, Chelsea stepped through quickly. The London club still have Mike Penders in the frame as well, with the £17m signing “in line to make his debut in the Carabao Cup against Luton Town on Thursday night.” The picture is suddenly crowded. That is exactly how Chelsea want it.
There had been previous interest in Martinez from Juventus, but that move collapsed over concerns about a finger injury. Chelsea have decided the risk is manageable. If the medical goes as expected, they will land one of the more eye-catching late moves of this window.
A busy Chelsea–Villa pipeline
The Martinez agreement is not an isolated piece of business. It is another strand in one of the most active transfer relationships in the Premier League.
Chelsea took Morgan Rogers from Villa for a club-record £117m, while Alejandro Garnacho headed in the opposite direction on an initial loan. Nicolas Jackson, valued at around £65m, was undergoing a medical at Villa Park as the two clubs continued to trade aggressively.
Add the Ian Maatsen and Omari Kellyman deal into the mix and a clear pattern emerges: when Chelsea and Villa pick up the phone, serious money tends to move.
A calculated gamble in goal
From a Chelsea perspective, this feels less like a panic buy and more like a line in the sand.
They have watched Sanchez, weighed the evidence, and chosen to act before the season’s ambitions are undermined. £7.5m for a goalkeeper of Martinez’s stature looks a shrewd fee in the current market, particularly for a player known for his authority in high-pressure moments.
He will not fix every defensive flaw on his own. But he brings voice, command, and a standard that Sanchez and Penders will have to meet or be left behind. That is the point.
Chelsea have talent across the pitch. What they have lacked is certainty in goal. Now they are betting that Martinez, with all his scars and medals, can give it to them when the games start to tighten and the margins shrink.
