Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: A Summer Transfer Saga
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has felt, at times, like another long summer saga heading for a familiar conclusion: admiration, negotiations, then disappointment. This one is starting to look different.
The mood around Anfield has been tense. Yan Diomande is heading to Real Madrid. Michael Olise is staying put. Targets have slipped away while rivals move. Yet in the middle of that frustration, the Barcola deal is quietly edging into Liverpool’s grasp.
A winger who wants Liverpool
The first major advantage for Liverpool is the one every sporting director craves: the player’s will.
Barcola has already informed Paris Saint-Germain that he does not intend to extend his contract beyond 2028. He wants out. More specifically, reports indicate he wants Liverpool over Arsenal this summer and has already reached a contractual agreement with the Merseyside club.
That kind of clarity changes the tone of any negotiation. PSG can hold out for their price, but they cannot manufacture a bidding war that does not exist. Arsenal admire him, Bayern Munich like him, Manchester City have tracked Ibrahim Mbaye instead, yet Barcola’s stance is clear. He sees his future in red.
For Liverpool, who are “crying out for more wingers”, as one report bluntly put it, that alignment is crucial. The club are pushing for Barcola while also keeping an eye on Mbaye, another PSG talent who has been given the green light to be seriously courted despite interest from City. The strategy is obvious: inject pace, goals and width into a squad that has looked a winger light.
The numbers game
The stumbling block is as predictable as it is hefty: the fee.
PSG are holding out for around £145m, a figure translated in France as €150m excluding bonuses. Liverpool, by contrast, want the deal closer to £100m and are reluctant to go above €120m.
On paper, that is a chasm. In reality, it may be a starting point.
L’Equipe journalist Loïc Tanzi, well plugged into the Paris club, believes a compromise is likely. He has gone as far as to say he is “inclined to say yes” when asked if Liverpool will get the deal done, even while stressing how far apart the clubs remain.
The timing helps Liverpool. There is still room in the window, and the pressure is not yet at panic levels. Liverpool have already increased their offer, a clear sign they are serious, but they have not blinked first. PSG, meanwhile, are reshaping their attack.
That is where the second major factor swings into view.
PSG move for Akliouche
Paris are not just listening to offers. They are buying.
On Thursday, PSG are set to finalise the signing of Maghnes Akliouche from AS Monaco. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the 22-year-old has landed in Paris to complete a €50m transfer, a deal agreed last week and now being formally signed.
Akliouche is not a depth signing. He is a creative, attacking wide player with the profile to step into a significant role. For Liverpool, that matters. A club does not spend €50m on a winger without considering the knock-on effect for those already in the building.
If PSG land Akliouche and then bring in a striker on top, as Tanzi suggested they hope to do, their stance on Barcola could soften. Suddenly, an asset who does not want to extend his contract, and who has already agreed terms elsewhere, looks more like an opportunity to balance the books than a cornerstone of the project.
The pressure finally begins to tilt towards Paris.
Bayern step aside – for now
The third boost for Liverpool comes from Germany.
Christian Falk, a well-connected German reporter, has poured cold water on the prospect of Bayern Munich hijacking the deal. The Bundesliga champions admire Barcola, see him as a potential long-term replacement option in the event Michael Olise eventually leaves, but the numbers this summer are simply too high.
“The left-sided winger is too expensive this summer for Bayern Munich,” Falk explained, adding that Liverpool are “closer to this deal”. Bayern will watch, they will plan, but they will not step into a bidding war now.
That removes one of the few clubs who could have matched PSG’s valuation without blinking. Bayern’s interest is more about next summer, and even that comes with a clear condition: Barcola would have to stay at PSG for another season.
If Liverpool move now and close, the German champions are out of the picture. If they hesitate and Barcola remains in Paris, Bayern could yet circle back in 12 months. The window is open, but it will not stay that way forever.
Liverpool’s moment to act
So Liverpool find themselves at a familiar crossroads, but with three key advantages rarely aligned at once: a player pushing to join, a selling club already signing his replacement, and a European heavyweight stepping aside because of the price.
They still need to bridge a gap of roughly €30m in valuation. They still need PSG to accept that a contract running to 2028 does not guarantee long-term commitment. They still need to decide how far they are willing to stretch for a winger in a market that has already burned them this summer.
Yet for a club that “really need a player like Barcola now”, as Falk put it, this is the kind of opportunity that defines a window.
Liverpool have been waiting for the right winger. Now the right winger is waiting for them.
