Jürgen Klopp Names Marc-André ter Stegen as Germany's New No. 1
Jürgen Klopp has not eased his way into the Germany job. He has kicked the door down.
In his first major call as national team coach, Klopp has ended years of debate over who guards the Germany goal, putting his faith firmly – and unmistakably – in Marc-André ter Stegen.
According to German daily "Bild", the Barcelona goalkeeper, currently on loan at Ajax, will be the new undisputed No. 1 for the four-time world champions. No rotation. No shared role. Ter Stegen is Klopp’s man.
Klopp did not leave the news to a press release. He picked up the phone himself. The 34-year-old keeper was told directly that he has the coach’s full confidence and will be in Klopp’s first squad, which is due to be announced next Thursday. Multiple German outlets report that the Hoffenheim goalkeeper will be left out of Klopp’s first squad altogether, despite years spent in the shadow of Neuer as a reliable backup option. For Baumann, long the nearly man of Germany’s goal, the door now appears shut.
Behind Ter Stegen, the battle lines are being redrawn. The race for the second and third spots is wide open and, this time, youth and upside seem to matter.
