Khephren Thuram’s Juventus season has stalled before it even started.

The French midfielder has been left out of the squad for this evening’s Serie A match against Parma at the Allianz Stadium and now faces a decisive medical appointment next week that could determine whether he needs knee surgery.

A problem that never went away

Thuram has been struggling with patellofemoral syndrome since the end of last season. The issue never truly cleared up. He spent much of pre-season working away from the main group, managing his workload rather than building rhythm, and he already missed Juventus’ opening league fixture against Frosinone last week.

Now comes the first major turning point. According to Sky Sport and Gazzetta, Thuram will travel to France next week to consult knee specialist Bertrand Sonnery Cottet. The French surgeon is well known in Turin: he previously operated on Gleison Bremer for cruciate ligament and meniscus damage and on Federico Gatti for a meniscus problem in recent years.

If Thuram follows the same path, Juventus could be without him for a significant stretch.

Luciano Spalletti did not try to mask the tension around the situation. Speaking on Friday, the Juventus coach admitted he was “very worried” about the midfielder’s condition, a rare moment of bluntness that underlines how important Thuram is to his plans and how serious this setback could become.

For now, Thuram watches from the stands as Juventus face Parma. The real battle, though, will be fought in a specialist’s office in France next week, where the call on surgery could shape the rest of his season.
