Joshua Zirkzee has told Juventus he is ready. Now the club are trying to work out how to bring him home to Serie A without tearing a hole in their balance sheet.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Bianconeri have received the key green light from Manchester United to explore a loan deal for the 23-year-old, whose two-year spell in the Premier League has drifted rather than exploded. The Dutch forward has made no secret of his nostalgia for Italy and has given his full availability to join Juventus.
For the Turin club, the timing is no coincidence.
David’s future grows darker by the day
Jonathan David arrived as the man meant to lead a new attacking cycle. One year later, his status feels far less secure.
His early withdrawal in a friendly against Chelsea in Hong Kong did more than just interrupt a pre-season outing. Inside the club, it was read as a symbolic moment: the beginning of a possible passing of the torch in attack. The Canadian’s first campaign in Turin brought only eight goals, a pale echo of the prolific numbers he posted at Lille.
David wants to stay. He is pushing to redeem that disappointing debut season and prove he can be the same ruthless finisher Italy watched from afar in Ligue 1. Juventus, for their part, respect his professionalism and attitude. But the market does not wait for sentiment.
The chance to bring in Zirkzee on a straight loan, without an obligation to buy, changes the equation. If the deal advances on the terms Juventus want, David may have to confront the possibility of an exit after just one year.
Massara’s calculated gamble
Behind the scenes at Continassa, sporting director Ricky Massara is driving the operation with the urgency of someone who feels an opportunity he cannot let slip.

The financial context is tight. Juventus have already fired a major shot in this window, committing €38 million plus €12m in guaranteed add-ons to bring in Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain. That outlay has sharply reduced their remaining room to manoeuvre.
A loan for Zirkzee, with no automatic purchase clause, would allow Juventus to raise the technical ceiling of their attack while keeping the accounts under control. It is exactly the kind of deal Massara is trying to engineer.
Not a classic No 9, but a clear upgrade
Zirkzee is not a pure central striker in the traditional sense. He drifts, links, pauses, and accelerates. He prefers to create angles rather than pin centre-backs with his back to goal.
That profile is precisely what intrigues Spalletti. The Dutchman has already shown in Serie A, during his time at Bologna, that he can orchestrate play at a high level, dropping between the lines, combining with midfielders and wingers, and still arriving in the box with timing and composure.
In a forward line that now includes Kolo Muani, his technical quality and international experience would offer something different: a connector, a reference point for combinations, a player who can change the rhythm of an attack with one touch.
But his arrival is not simply a question of tactics. It is chained directly to David’s situation. One domino has to fall before the next can move.
