Juventus Fined €10,000 for Disrupting Mazzola Tribute

Lega Serie A has hit Juventus with a €10,000 fine after a section of their supporters disrupted the minute’s silence in memory of Inter and Italy great Sandro Mazzola at the weekend.

Mazzola, one of the defining figures of Italian football and a legend of Inter’s Grande Inter era, died on Saturday at the age of 83. The league ordered a minute’s silence before every Serie A fixture that followed, a unified gesture to honour a rival icon whose impact went far beyond club colours.

At the Allianz Stadium in Turin, that silence fractured.

Ahead of Juventus’ match against Atalanta, while players from both sides stood around the centre circle to pay their respects, a number of fans in the Curva Sud turned their backs to the pitch. During the tribute, they began chanting in honour of some of Juventus’ own former heroes instead of observing the silence for Mazzola.

The reaction outside that corner of the stadium was immediate and fierce. The behaviour drew widespread criticism across the Italian football community, cutting against the shared sense of mourning that had been visible at other grounds.

Juventus themselves moved quickly. Almost as soon as the game had finished, the club released an official statement publicly condemning the actions of those supporters, distancing the institution from an episode that jarred with the tone elsewhere in Serie A.

Lega Serie A has now formalised its response with the financial sanction, underlining that the league expects its clubs to ensure tributes of this nature are respected, regardless of historic rivalries or club allegiances.
