Gabriel's Future at Manchester United: Rooney's Warning
Wayne Rooney has warned that Manchester United stand to suffer a “massive blow” if 15-year-old sensation Gabriel follows through on his request to leave Old Trafford.
The teenager, who turns 16 next month, has already forced his way onto the radar of Europe’s elite. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are tracking his situation closely, waiting to see whether United can salvage a deal or lose one of the most coveted prospects in their academy.
A Hat-Trick That Echoed Around Europe
Gabriel’s reputation exploded on the European stage in the UEFA Youth League. On his debut in the competition, he tore into Sabah with a stunning hat-trick, a performance that underlined why scouts from the continent’s biggest clubs have been circling.
It wasn’t just the goals. It was the composure, the timing of his runs, the ease with which he played against older opponents. For many inside Carrington, it felt like confirmation of what they had been whispering for months: this is a special one.
Rooney’s Personal Stake
Rooney is not speaking from a distance. He has watched Gabriel up close, playing alongside his son Kai in United’s youth ranks. That personal connection sharpened the edge in his voice as he spoke on the Stick To Football podcast on Disney+.
“I have seen JJ grow up, he has been in [my son] Kai's team,” Rooney said. “Anyone close to it knew that was coming. In fairness to Manchester United they have done everything, absolutely everything, to keep him at the club.
“The club have treated him probably differently to the other players because he is such a special player. I know, I recognise that, because I was that player at Everton. I was getting that treatment at Everton.
“As a club, you need to do [it] to try to keep the better players. It's disappointing because he is such a top player and a lovely kid. You never know whether it's gone too far or whether there is a chance for him to stay.”
Rooney’s comparison with his own rise at Everton is no small compliment. He knows exactly what it looks like when a club bends its rules for a prodigy.
“Such a Special Talent”
The former England captain is convinced Gabriel has the tools to go all the way.
“He is a top player,” Rooney said. “His ability, his balance, he has shown he can go up the ages and score goals. The next step is first-team football where it's different, and you never know until you're in there.
“But he's such a special talent who understands the game really well. At some point this season he would [have] made his debut for the first-team, I'd imagine, so that's where it's disappointing.”
That last line cuts to the heart of United’s frustration. Internally, there was a strong belief that Gabriel was on course for a senior debut before the season was out. Instead of planning that moment, the club is now fighting to keep him.
United Fight to Keep Their Gem
Despite the transfer request, United have not given up. The hierarchy remain hopeful they can repair the relationship and persuade Gabriel and his camp that Old Trafford is still the best place for his development.
