Julián Álvarez's Future: Arsenal or Stay at Atlético Madrid?
Julián Álvarez can see only one door still open this summer – and it does not lead to Barcelona.
Atlético Madrid have shut that path completely. According to "Marca", club sources are adamant: the chance of selling the Argentine striker to Barça is "zero". Not low. Not unlikely. Zero.
Álvarez has responded by staying away from training for a third consecutive day, clinging to his dream of joining the Catalan giants. Barcelona president Joan Laporta had vowed to keep pushing until the final hours of the window, but every public word from Madrid has only hardened Atlético’s stance and deepened the rift between the two clubs.
The relationship was already strained. Now it is openly hostile.
Barcelona blocked, Arsenal watching
With the domestic route closed, Atlético have drawn a clear line: Álvarez can leave only for a foreign club, and only if someone pays 150 million euros. That figure has not scared everyone away.
Arsenal are circling.
The Premier League side have been monitoring the situation closely and are seen as the most realistic destination. Their project appeals to Álvarez, who is intrigued by the sporting step a move to London could represent after his turbulent spell in Spain.
His future in Madrid was thrown into doubt after a flashpoint against Villarreal, when sections of the Atlético support turned on their own star. Jeers rang out, Álvarez headed straight for the dressing room alone, and the fracture between player and fans suddenly looked very real.
Since then, the idea of a clean break has gathered pace. Just not to Barcelona.
Football meets bureaucracy
Arsenal’s interest is strong, but the deal is not just about tactics and transfer fees. Off the pitch, immigration rules threaten to complicate everything.
Álvarez currently lives in Spain with his family. Post-Brexit Britain has tightened its immigration laws, and the residency and visa procedures for relatives are no longer a formality. Some of his family members saw their UK residency permits expire after his previous spell in England, adding another layer of paperwork – and risk – to any move.
His wife’s case is more straightforward. As journalist Verónica Brunati has pointed out, she would be able to obtain residency as the dependent partner of a holder of a work visa, allowing her to live legally with Álvarez in the United Kingdom if he joins Arsenal.
That nuance matters. For a player weighing up uprooting his family again, those guarantees carry almost as much weight as a tactical role or a shirt number.
Arsenal bide their time
Inside the Emirates, there is quiet confidence. Arsenal believe they can manage the visa process for Álvarez’s family and remove one of the major obstacles to a transfer. The club are convinced a deal with Atlético is possible before the window shuts on 1 September.
What they have not done yet is pull the trigger.
No decisive official offer has landed on Atlético’s desk, despite the clock ticking down and the Spanish club’s position being crystal clear: no Barcelona, 150 million euros from abroad, or he stays.
Álvarez waits, training ground absent, his preferred move blocked, his most realistic route leading back to England and a league that knows him well.
