Cristiano Ronaldo Approaches 1,000 Career Goals with Al Nassr
Cristiano Ronaldo moved to within touching distance of a scarcely believable landmark on Friday night, dragging Al Nassr past Al Taawoun and tightening his grip on the club’s record books in the process.
The 39-year-old struck the decisive blow in the 50th minute of a 2-1 win, taking his career tally to 978 goals and leaving him just 22 short of the mythical 1,000 mark. One swing of his right foot, another step towards history.
Records fall, one by one
Ronaldo didn’t just win the game. He rewrote Al Nassr’s modern story.
His goal confirmed him as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Saudi Pro League era, moving to 104 league goals and nudging past Mohammad Al Sahlawi’s 103. He also drew level with Al Sahlawi’s 131-goal haul across all competitions for the club, with only the legendary Majed Abdullah – out in front on 259 – still ahead of him.
On the night, Ronaldo played 80 minutes, posted an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.08 and completed 90% of his passes. The numbers underline it; the moment defined it. When the game needed a decision, he provided it.
A tight contest, settled by a familiar figure
Al Nassr had to work for this one.
Bassam Al Hurayji stunned them early, striking in the 11th minute to give Al Taawoun a shock lead. The visitors had to chase, probe, and stay patient. The breakthrough finally came deep into first-half stoppage time, when Samuel Costa levelled in the 45’+5, dragging Al Nassr back into a contest that threatened to drift away from them.
That set the platform. Ronaldo finished the job.
His winner early in the second half flipped the mood completely, turning anxiety into control and ensuring Al Nassr’s perfect start to the league campaign stayed intact.
A streak that won’t stop
The goal did more than tilt a single match. It extended a remarkable club run.
Al Nassr have now scored in 91 consecutive matches, the second-longest goalscoring streak in football history and the longest active run in Saudi Arabian football. Six more games with a goal, and they will own the world record outright.
Ronaldo sits at the heart of that relentless rhythm. Since joining the club, he has been directly involved in 155 goals across 150 appearances – numbers that explain why every attack seems to orbit around him.
Top of the table, pressure rising
The victory over Al Taawoun keeps Al Nassr at the summit of the Saudi Pro League table. Four games, four wins, 12 points. A flawless opening.
For Al Taawoun, the picture is far less flattering. Defeat leaves them down in 15th with just two points, already staring at a season that threatens to become a struggle if they cannot turn performances into results.
Al Nassr, by contrast, look like a side comfortable with expectation. And with Ronaldo in this mood, they have every reason to be.
Fire, frustration, and a perfect response
This surge comes on the back of a wild 3-2 comeback against Al Ettifaq in the previous round, a night that showcased both the volatility and the value of their captain.
Trailing 2-0 at half-time, manager Ange Postecoglou made the bold call to withdraw Ronaldo at the break. The forward’s reaction was there for all to see – arms thrown up, the captain’s armband dropped on the turf, frustration spilling over as he left the pitch.
The gamble worked. Sadio Mane struck twice in the second half to complete a dramatic turnaround, and Postecoglou later defended his star, describing Ronaldo as “passionate about football and passionate about Al-Nassr”.
That passion, channelled the right way, is now fuelling a title charge and a personal chase for a number the sport has never truly contemplated: 1,000 career goals.
