Across England and Spain, reports agree on one thing: the Manchester United prodigy is in Barcelona with his family, taking a look at a city that could soon be home. This is no casual city break. It is a scouting trip in reverse – the player and his entourage doing their own due diligence.
Sky Sports have gone a step further, describing talks with Barcelona as “advanced”. Real Madrid, predictably, are not far away. They are also said to be in the running, locked into the same high-level conversations. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are in the frame too, but the two Spanish giants are believed to hold the upper hand for now.
Bayern’s quiet charm offensive
In Germany, Bild paint a picture of a long, patient courtship. Bayern have been in contact with Gabriel and his camp since February, according to their report. Bastian Wernscheid, assistant to board member for sport Max Eberl, is described as a key figure in the pursuit, with a personal meeting already taking place.
Sporting director Christoph Freund, though, refused to be drawn when questioned on Friday. He stuck rigidly to the party line.
“I do not talk about players who are under contract at other clubs. We know the player because he is very, very talented – an exceptional talent. But I cannot say any more about it,” he said, while denying any current exchange with the player’s side.
The message was clear: Bayern know exactly who Gabriel is. They just will not say how close they are.
The passport puzzle

As an English player, Gabriel cannot simply walk into a European club and start his professional career. Under international transfer regulations, he would only be allowed to move and play as a professional from his 18th birthday. That restriction would hit Real Madrid and Barcelona just as hard as anyone else.
There is, however, a loophole. Gabriel’s father is from Ireland and his mother has Cypriot roots. With that background, the teenager could secure an EU passport, opening the door to an earlier move and smoothing the path for any club willing to invest in his future.

By all accounts, Gabriel no longer sees his future at Manchester United. The Telegraph recently reported that he is determined to leave and has gone as far as asking for his registration with the club to be cancelled. Inside United, the move is said to have caused “shock” and been described as “almost unprecedented”.
This is not a fringe player forcing his way out. Gabriel has been at United since the age of 11 and has torn through youth football. Last season he scored 23 goals in 23 Under-18 matches, a ruthless return that earned him the Under-18 Premier League’s best player award.
In August, he stepped over another historic line, making his professional debut and becoming the youngest player in Manchester United’s history to feature for the first team. The club had every reason to believe they were watching the next one come through.
He kept delivering. On his UEFA Youth League debut, Gabriel hit a hat-trick in a 5-0 home win over Sabah, underlining once again why Europe’s elite are circling.
Then came the digital cut. According to the Telegraph, after that game he removed all Manchester United-related posts from his social media accounts. For a modern footballer, that is not a small gesture. It is a statement.
Now, as Barcelona roll out the charm and Real Madrid, Bayern and PSG hover, United stand on the brink of losing one of the brightest prospects to pass through their academy in years. The battle for JJ Gabriel’s signature has only just begun – but for his boyhood club, it already feels dangerously close to being over.
