Andros Townsend has walked away from one of the most frightening off-field incidents seen in recent years – and still found a way to step onto the pitch before the night was over.
The former England winger was run over by a heavy pitch roller at Tinsulanon Stadium in Thailand ahead of PT Prachuap’s Thai League 1 clash with Pattani FC, a freak accident that briefly silenced the ground and left team-mates turning away in horror.
A freak collision on a routine warm-up
PT Prachuap were going through their usual pre-match drills when the chaos unfolded near the touchline. Townsend, attempting an aerial backheel close to the sideline, landed directly in the path of a moving roller being driven across the surface.
The machine did not stop in time.
It struck the 35-year-old and rolled over him, catching his hip and thigh. For a few terrifying seconds, Townsend was trapped underneath the heavy equipment as panic rippled through the stadium.
Some team-mates couldn’t bear to look. Others sprinted towards the scene, waving for help as staff rushed in.

Goals from Saharat Kanyaroj, Taoua Ferreira and Edgar Mendez put the hosts 3-0 up, turning a traumatic build-up into a comfortable scoreline. With the game deep into stoppage time and safely won, Townsend completed his extraordinary evening by stepping onto the pitch as a late substitute.
Hours after being pinned under a ground machine, he was back doing what he came to Thailand to do: play.

Townsend, capped 13 times by England, joined PT Prachuap after spells with Kanchanaburi Power and Turkish side Antalyaspor, adding another chapter to a career that has already taken in some of English football’s biggest stages.
He has worn the colours of Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton and Luton Town in the Premier League, scoring big goals and surviving more than one professional reset. This, though, was a different kind of test.
PT Prachuap took all three points despite the pre-match shock surrounding their marquee name, but the real victory was that Townsend walked away at all.
