So the good news on the medical front has turned into an awkward selection call.
Balde and Farinas on the edge
The gradual recovery of players has sharpened the intensity in training. Sessions now run at a higher tempo, with Flick and his staff able to shuffle options, tweak systems and test combinations across the pitch.
But that same depth creates the first genuine selection “problem” of his tenure for this league clash with Valencia. Someone who has trained all week, someone who is fit, will be cut from the list.
As reported by SPORT, Alejandro Balde and Brian Farinas are among those at risk of missing out. Both find themselves right on the edge of the squad at a time when every place suddenly feels expensive.
A different scenario for Balde
Balde knows what it feels like to be left out. On the opening matchday against Elche, he did not make the squad at all. Then, it was a blunt technical decision. Flick publicly explained that he did not see the full-back focused enough and chose to leave him out.
This time, the context has shifted.
Since that first snub, Balde has been named in the next two La Liga matchday squads, even if he has yet to play a single minute in the competition. His status has improved, his attitude noted, but the numbers still squeeze him.
Farinas, meanwhile, is also firmly in the conversation. His place depends not just on his own performances but on how Flick wants to balance the squad by position, experience and roles on the bench.
The coach must now weigh every line: full-back cover, midfield variety, attacking options, dressing-room hierarchy. One decision, one name crossed out before the team even travels.
Barcelona wanted competition for places. They have it. Now Flick has to decide who pays the price for that progress when the list for Valencia is finally handed in.
