Great Danes Rally Late for Draw Against Stony Brook
Down two goals with 10 minutes to play, UAlbany refused to fold.
The Great Danes stormed back for a 2-2 draw against Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, turning what looked like a routine Seawolves win into a statement of resilience.
UAlbany moves to 2-4-1 on the season, while Stony Brook stands at 3-0-4.
UAlbany on the Front Foot
From the opening whistle, UAlbany carried the initiative.
In the 5th minute, Sydney Kofton fired the first warning shot, setting the tone for a relentless afternoon. The Great Danes kept coming, peppering the Stony Brook back line and forcing the visitors to absorb long spells of pressure.
Goalkeeper Claudia Volino was called into action in the 24th minute, making her first save to keep the game level. One minute later, the hosts got a scare. Stony Brook’s Maya Corbett rattled the post in the 25th minute, her effort bouncing out as the Seawolves came inches from snatching the lead against the run of play.
UAlbany responded with a barrage. Six more shots flew toward goal before halftime, but nothing broke the deadlock. The teams went into the break locked at 0-0, with the Great Danes holding the edge in intent but not on the scoreboard.
Seawolves Strike, Twice
The stalemate didn’t survive long after the restart.
In the 56th minute, Stony Brook finally punished UAlbany, finishing off a move to go 1-0 up. The goal flipped the rhythm of the match. Suddenly, the Seawolves looked sharper in transition, more confident in possession.
The pressure tightened in the 71st minute. Stony Brook doubled the advantage, stretching the lead to 2-0 and silencing the early momentum UAlbany had built. With less than 20 minutes left, the Great Danes faced a steep climb.
Blannett and Levac Lead the Rally
That’s when the comeback started.
In the 80th minute, Meredith Blannett broke through, slotting home her first goal of the year to slice the deficit in half. At 2-1, belief surged back into the home side. Every second ball, every loose touch, suddenly felt like an opportunity.
Seven minutes later, they cashed in again.
Kiara Levac found the equalizer in the 87th minute, capping the late surge and dragging UAlbany level at 2-2. The Great Danes, once staring at a two-goal hole, now had the Seawolves reeling.
The closing seconds brought one last chance. UAlbany earned a corner in stoppage time, flooding the box in search of a winner. The delivery came in, bodies crashed together, but the ball stayed out. The whistle followed, sealing the draw.
Numbers Tell the Story
The stat sheet underlined UAlbany’s attacking intent.
The Great Danes outshot Stony Brook 30-16, unleashing wave after wave of attempts. They put 11 of those shots on target, compared to just four for the Seawolves.
Kofton led the charge with 11 shots of her own, including eight headers and five on goal, constantly testing the Stony Brook defense. Blannett finished with a goal and six shots, while Levac added her equalizer and four attempts.
The scoreboard read 2-2, but the performance hinted at a team finding its attacking edge.
