Gibbs-White Returns to England Squad After Palmer Injury
Morgan Gibbs-White is set to be thrown back into the England picture, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder in line for a recall ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures, according to BBC reports.
His opportunity comes at the expense of Cole Palmer. The Chelsea forward is expected to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad with a minor injury, a setback that arrives just as his international career looked ready to restart.
Palmer played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, but the knock has ruled him out of the international break. It is a cruel twist for a player who spent the summer watching the World Cup from home and then responded by becoming one of Chelsea’s central figures.
This season, the 24-year-old has started six of Chelsea’s seven matches, scoring four goals and supplying two assists. He had earned his way back into the England fold on merit, not reputation.
Tuchel was clear about the challenge facing him. Before the injury, the England manager said Palmer had a “point to prove” on his return and demanded that he “step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.” The message was blunt: no free rides, even for a player many felt should never have been left out of the World Cup squad in the first place.
Palmer’s last England outing came in March, a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan. He will now have to wait again, his ambitions stalled by a body that has already tested his patience.
His fitness has been under the microscope before. A recurring groin issue disrupted his 2025-26 campaign, to the frustration of then-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City, who publicly questioned how the situation had been allowed to drag on.
Now the door swings open for Gibbs-White.
Initially omitted from Tuchel’s squad, the 26-year-old Forest playmaker was, by the manager’s own admission on Friday, “incredibly close” to making the original list. Palmer’s misfortune shifts him from nearly-man to next man up.
Gibbs-White has made a sharp start to the domestic season, with one goal and two assists in five league games. It is the kind of form that forces conversations in selection meetings. His last England appearance came in October 2025, a 3-0 friendly win over Wales, and he has been waiting for another shot ever since.
He now steps into a camp staring down a brutal schedule. England face four matches across a demanding extended international break, the type of run that tests depth, resilience and reputations.
