Getafe Pursue Stefan Bajcetic as Liverpool Faces Transfer Decision
Getafe have opened talks to sign Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, with the Spaniard’s Anfield future back under the microscope in the final stretch of the summer transfer window.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that negotiations are under way, with a “formula being discussed” for a move back to Spain. It remains unclear whether the LaLiga club are pushing for a loan or a permanent deal.
From breakout star to stalled career
Bajcetic’s story at Liverpool looked very different not so long ago.
In the months after the 2022 World Cup, he burst into the first team as an 18-year-old and immediately looked at ease in the Premier League. His standout display came in a derby win early in 2023, when his composure and aggression in midfield suggested Liverpool had unearthed a long-term pillar for their next era.
Then everything stopped.
Persistent injuries wrecked his momentum. The 21-year-old has not played a competitive minute since the tail end of the 2024/25 season, a brutal halt for a player who had seemed on a fast track to a regular role.
Training return, but no pre-season platform
There has finally been some good news on the fitness front. Bajcetic has rejoined full training and travelled with Andoni Iraola’s squad for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States.
But the chance to turn that step forward into minutes never came.
He did not feature in any of Liverpool’s pre-season matches, missing what is often the best window for a young player to force his way back into a manager’s plans. While he worked on his sharpness, others seized the stage.
Trey Nyoni, in particular, has surged ahead, his form tightening the competition in midfield and pushing Bajcetic further down the pecking order. Even the possibility of Curtis Jones leaving for Inter Milan has not obviously cleared a path back into Iraola’s immediate thoughts.
A decision looming for club and player
Liverpool now face a delicate call.
Without clarity on Getafe’s proposal — whether they want a loan or a permanent signing, and on what financial terms — it is hard to judge how strongly the club should consider letting him go. A loan could offer much-needed minutes without closing the door on his Anfield future. A permanent sale would be a far more definitive break with a player who once looked central to the club’s rebuild.
For Bajcetic, the picture is more personal, and perhaps simpler.
After months of rehabilitation and frustration, the promise of regular football in LaLiga will carry real weight. If Getafe can convince him that he will play consistently in Madrid, the pull of home and the chance to restart a stalled career may be hard to resist.
Two weeks remain in the window. Liverpool’s midfield has moved on without him. The question now is whether Bajcetic’s next step comes on Merseyside or under the Spanish sun.
