Genk Signs Uruguay Right-Back Kevin Amaro

Genk have gone back to a familiar market in search of their next breakout star, announcing the signing of 22-year-old Uruguay right-back Kevin Amaro on a five-year deal.

The defender arrives from Liverpool Montevideo, the capital-based club in his homeland, and steps into a pathway Genk know well. The Belgian side have built a reputation for spotting and polishing young full-backs from Latin America, with Daniel Muñoz the standout example. Muñoz used his move from Colombia to launch a European career that now includes trophy success with Crystal Palace. Genk will hope Amaro can trace a similar route.

Amaro’s rise in Uruguay has been steady rather than explosive. He made his Liverpool debut in the 2022 season but only truly forced his way into the first-team picture in 2024. That year he played 42 games and scored once, then followed it up in 2025 with 34 appearances and another goal. This season he had already featured 17 times before Genk made their move.

Capable of operating anywhere down the right flank, Amaro brings more than just defensive cover. His versatility gives Genk options: right-back in a back four, wing-back in a three, or higher up as a wide midfielder when the game demands more aggression. He has also been capped a handful of times by the Uruguay national team, a sign of how highly he is regarded back home.

Genk have started their Belgian Pro League campaign with one win and one defeat, a reminder that this is a team still settling. Into that mix walks a young South American full-back with a long contract, a clear pathway, and a recent success story to chase.
