Fenerbahce Signs Mason Greenwood in Record Marseille Deal
Fenerbahce have landed one of the headline transfers of the summer, winning the battle for Mason Greenwood with a package that rips up Marseille’s record books and underlines the Turkish club’s growing ambition.
Foot Mercato report that Fenerbahce have agreed a total deal worth €42m (£35.6m) with Marseille, built around a fixed €40m fee plus a further €2m in performance-related bonuses. For a player who only arrived in Ligue 1 two years ago, it is a staggering turnaround – and a sale Marseille could no longer resist.
Marseille cash in, records fall
Greenwood was under contract at the Stade Vélodrome until June 2029, a long-term commitment that had once made him central to Marseille’s project. That project has changed. A strict cost-cutting drive from the OM hierarchy has turned assets into numbers on a balance sheet, and Greenwood, their most valuable chip, had to go.
The deal doesn’t just help balance the books; it rewrites the club’s history. The fee will smash Marseille’s all-time record for an outgoing transfer, surpassing the €39m Chelsea paid for Michy Batshuayi in 2016. For a club under financial pressure, turning one player into a record windfall became impossible to ignore.
They still had options. Atletico Madrid and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli both tabled higher financial proposals, but money wasn’t the decisive factor. Greenwood chose Istanbul. He chose the Turkish top flight and the chance to lead the line for a club obsessed with reclaiming its throne.
A ruthless Ligue 1 stint
He leaves France with numbers that explain Fenerbahce’s determination. Across 81 competitive appearances in all competitions, Greenwood produced 48 goals and 17 assists. Those are elite returns, the kind that force clubs to stretch their budgets and rework their wage structures.
That output convinced Fenerbahce to go all in. The forward will sign a four-year contract and, according to reports, collect around €10m (£8.5m) per season. It is the kind of salary reserved for centrepieces, not squad players. Fenerbahce are betting heavily that his Ligue 1 form travels with him.
Istanbul rebuild gathers pace
This is not an isolated splash. Head coach Ismail Kartal is overseeing a sweeping rebuild aimed at arming Fenerbahce for a gruelling domestic and European calendar. Greenwood arrives as part of a high-profile intake that already includes Nathan Ake and Vedat Muriqi, a spine designed to add both quality and depth.
The plan is clear: multiple threats, multiple solutions. Greenwood’s versatility and finishing should dovetail with Muriqi’s presence and Ake’s stability at the back, giving Kartal options he simply did not have last season. The expectation is that Greenwood will settle quickly, step straight into the starting XI and carry the scoring burden he shouldered so comfortably in France.
There will be no gentle introduction. His first challenge is as stark as it gets in Turkish football: stop Galatasaray. Fenerbahce’s fiercest rivals have strung together four straight Super Lig titles and built a modern-era dominance that gnaws at the yellow-and-navy half of Istanbul.
That is the backdrop Greenwood walks into – a club desperate to end an era, a fanbase demanding a statement season, and a league where every dropped point feels like a small crisis. Fenerbahce have paid record money and Premier League wages for a forward who has already proved he can deliver under pressure.
Now the question is simple: can he do it with an entire city watching?
