FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle in 3-0 Victory
FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They exposed them. A sharp, confident 3-0 win at the Euroborg pushed Dick Lukkien’s side up to sixth, while a bruised PEC slid down to 16th and sank a little deeper into trouble.
Zwolle came north still stinging from that 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord, talking about reaction and resilience. Groningen never gave them the chance.
From the opening minutes the pattern was clear: Groningen on the front foot, Zwolle nervy and hesitant, every misplaced pass greeted by a murmur in the stands. The hosts snapped into challenges, moved the ball quickly, and pinned the visitors back.
The pressure told after 20 minutes. Marco Rente stepped in with purpose and threaded a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders. The forward stayed cool, looked up, and instead of snatching at goal rolled it back perfectly for Thom van Bergen. One touch, calm finish. 1-0, and fully deserved.
Zwolle wobbled. Groningen smelled weakness.
Not long after, Schreuders turned from provider to finisher. Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area, and Schreuders pounced instantly. He shifted it onto his supposedly weaker left foot and, from outside the box, drilled a low strike past the keeper for 2-0. Clinical. Simple. And for Zwolle, painfully familiar.
The Euroborg relaxed. Groningen played with a swagger; Zwolle just tried to reach half-time without further damage.
After the break, Johnny Jansen’s side finally showed a flicker. A low cross from the left cut through the Groningen back line and found Gabriël Reiziger stealing in. He stretched, got the slightest touch, and for a moment it looked like the lifeline they craved. The ball slid past the far post instead. That was as close as PEC came.
Groningen reset, tightened up, and went back to work. Zwolle had more of the ball but almost none of the belief. Groningen kept them at arm’s length, defended with control, and waited for the next opening.
It arrived on 68 minutes, from the training ground. An indirect free-kick routine unfolded at the edge of the area, the ball rolled into the path of Tygo Land, and he did the rest. He thumped a fierce shot into the top corner, a hammer blow that made it 3-0 and killed any lingering doubt.
The home crowd roared; Zwolle’s heads dropped.
Van Bergen nearly added extra gloss late on. A loose ball dropped kindly for him inside the penalty area and he swung his left foot at it, hunting his second of the night. This time the finish lacked the precision of his opener, the chance slipping away.
It did not matter. Groningen had already done their job with authority, climbing into the top six and tightening their grip on the season.
For PEC Zwolle, though, the questions grow louder. After 0-7 and now 0-3, how long can they keep talking about a response without delivering one?
