The JJ Gabriel situation has been simmering for weeks. It is now close to boiling.
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed on August 13 that United were growing concerned about the 15-year-old attacker’s future, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both pushing hard to lure him away from Old Trafford.
Gabriel has since taken a decisive step. Earlier this week he formally notified United that he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect, a move designed to clear the way for him to become a free agent.
Bailey’s latest update, on September 18, confirmed that Gabriel has already held talks with both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Those conversations, sources say, have been positive for the Spanish giants.
United, though, are staring at a paltry return for a player they have nurtured. According to The Daily Mail, if Gabriel ends up at either Barcelona or Madrid, the compensation due to United would be in the region of £300,000.
For a club that has made a point of rebuilding its academy pipeline, it is a stinging figure.
Gabriel’s Irish passport is central to the situation. It allows him to move abroad once he turns 16 on October 6, removing many of the usual barriers for English-based youngsters seeking early moves to continental powerhouses. The timing is no coincidence; the race for his signature is expected to intensify as that birthday approaches.
Wilcox stands by Carrick as pressure builds – and boardroom doubts grow
While United wrestle with the prospect of losing a prized teenager for a fraction of his perceived potential value, another battle is playing out higher up the club.
On September 17, Bailey reported that United’s hierarchy had opted to keep Michael Carrick in place as manager. Co-owners INEOS have no immediate plan to sack him, despite a stuttering start to the Premier League campaign – four points from four games – and a League Cup exit at Old Trafford to Brighton and Hove Albion this week.
Inside the club, Jason Wilcox is emerging as one of Carrick’s staunchest allies.
Popular United fan, YouTuber and presenter Mark Goldbridge, who has over 1.1 million followers on X, claimed on September 18 that Wilcox is firmly backing Carrick behind the scenes, even as at least one board member remains unconvinced.
Goldbridge wrote: “Someone on the board isn’t convinced by Carrick. It’s not Wilcox though. Wilcox is firmly with Carrick and believes United should stick with his decision for the long term.”
He then turned the spotlight sharply onto Wilcox himself, questioning why the director of football continues to hold such influence at Old Trafford.
“The BIG question is why Wilcox is still here? Everything he’s touched has been catastrophic and he had no CV for this job in the first place. How he’s still calling the shots is incredible,” Goldbridge posted.
He went on to outline Wilcox’s remit – staying close to training, supporting Carrick on coaching and recruitment – and pointedly noted that Wilcox has already overseen the dismissals of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim since arriving at United in April 2024.
The result is a club pulled in different directions: a manager under scrutiny, a director of football doubling down on his choice, and at least one dissenting voice in the boardroom who is far from convinced this is the right path.
Tuchel’s firm message to Maguire
Away from Old Trafford but still very much concerning one of its most high-profile players, Thomas Tuchel has delivered a stark reminder to Harry Maguire about the consequences of going public with frustration.
The England manager left Maguire out of his squad for the 2026 World Cup finals in the summer and has again omitted the Manchester United centre-back from his latest group for the September and October international fixtures.
Maguire has not hidden his disappointment. He spoke openly about being left out of the World Cup squad, a reaction that has clearly stuck in Tuchel’s mind.
Asked whether Maguire’s public response had made it harder to recall him, Tuchel did not dodge the issue. As quoted by The Mirror, he said: “It doesn’t help. It does not help.
“I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life because I’m not that type of person. I can forget easily and quickly, but I didn’t like it and it doesn’t help.”
