Evra and Makelele Endorse Arsenal's Midfield Vision

Patrice Evra spent his peak years trying to make life miserable for Arsenal. Now he wants one of France’s most promising midfielders to join them.

Despite his iconic status at Manchester United, Evra has urged compatriot Manu Koné to consider a move to north London and link up with the Premier League champions. Speaking to Stake, the former left-back made it clear he sees Koné as built for English football.

“I like Manu Kone’s profile for the Premier League. He has energy, he carries the ball, he likes duels and he works for the team,” Evra said, underlining the attributes that tend to survive the Premier League’s intensity rather than get exposed by it.

For Evra, it comes down to adaptation and patience in a league that rarely offers either.

“All of those things matter in England. The Premier League is faster. You don’t get time to breathe. So the important thing is adaptation. Don’t judge him after five games,” he warned.

The message was clear: Koné has the raw materials, but he will need the right environment and a manager who knows exactly how to use him.

“If he goes to Arsenal with a manager who knows how to use him, I think he can do well. He definitely has the tools. Then it is about consistency.”

Koné, though, is not at the top of Arsenal’s current shopping list. While Evra talks up his potential arrival at the Emirates, the club’s hierarchy is locked in on another midfield target: Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães.

The Brazilian has reportedly agreed personal terms with Arsenal, who see him as a ready-made addition to a squad built to compete at the very top. And Evra is not the only former great endorsing that direction.

Claude Makelele, one of the defining midfielders of his generation and a Chelsea legend, has thrown his full support behind Arsenal’s pursuit of Guimarães. Speaking to ComeOn, he painted a picture of a player whose ambitions mirror the club’s current trajectory.

“Bruno Guimaraes is an ambitious player who sees his career one way: Champions League football, always, and teams built to win titles in Europe,” Makelele said.

In his eyes, Arsenal are no longer the nearly-men of old. They are a destination.

“Arsenal tick every box. They won the Premier League, they’ve gone deep in the Champions League, and they’re built to go again. It’s always right for a good player to join a great team, and Arsenal have done great business.”

Makelele did not hold back on his assessment of Guimarães’ quality either.

“Bruno Guimaraes is a very good player, exceptional, as we saw with Brazil. It’s his career and his decision, but his game fits Arsenal perfectly.”

Two great midfield minds, from rival eras and rival clubs, pointing towards the same conclusion: Arsenal have become the kind of team elite midfielders are expected to join, not avoid. The only question now is which one walks through the door first.
