Edu Leaves Nottingham Forest After Turbulent Year
Edu’s brief and uneasy spell at Nottingham Forest is over, with the club’s global head of football leaving the City Ground just over a year after his arrival.
The former Arsenal midfielder had effectively vanished from the front line months ago. He has not been at a Forest game since February and, with his contract understood to have been terminated, his departure had been looming in the background of an already chaotic season.
His role came under sharp scrutiny after a clash with Nuno Espirito Santo, sacked last September and the first of four managers Forest burned through last campaign. Nuno openly hinted at friction inside the club and admitted his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had shifted, a pointed comment that only fuelled questions about the internal power structure.
The tension never really cleared. Now Edu has gone, and Forest are not planning a like-for-like replacement. Chief football officer George Syrianos will absorb his responsibilities, tightening the circle around Marinakis as the club tries to steady itself after a season of churn.
Edu had been appointed in July 2025 with a wide-ranging brief that stretched beyond Nottingham. His remit covered Olympiacos in Greece and Rio Ave in Portugal, both also under Marinakis’ ownership, tying the clubs more closely together at executive level.
He arrived with a strong reputation from Arsenal, where he spent six years in the hierarchy and became the club’s first sporting director in 2022. As a player, he had helped the Gunners to two Premier League titles and two FA Cups, and as an executive he played a key role in bringing Mikel Arteta to Emirates Stadium. Arteta has since delivered Arsenal’s first Premier League crown in 22 years, a landmark achievement that had only enhanced Edu’s standing when Forest came calling.
The timing of his exit is no coincidence. It follows another major boardroom change, with former Olympiacos vice-president Theodore Giannikos appointed Forest’s chief executive last week. Giannikos replaces Lina Souloukou, who stepped down at the end of last season, continuing the reshuffle at the City Ground as Marinakis tightens his grip on the club’s direction.
Forest now move forward without the man they once saw as a key architect of a multi-club vision. The question is whether this leaner structure brings clarity — or simply sets the stage for the next power struggle.
