Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements has led them firmly towards Djed Spence – and the England international is understood to be more than ready to make Anfield his next home.

The 24-year-old, one of Tottenham’s standout performers last season and a World Cup regular for England, has emerged as a serious option as Andoni Iraola grapples with a stretched back line and a lack of depth at full-back.

Liverpool’s defensive headache

Liverpool have spent the summer reshaping carefully rather than dramatically. Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet are through the door, but the squad still looks light in key areas.

At the back, the issues are piling up. Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez are all currently unavailable for various reasons. Spurs reporter @szyexcl has stated that the club would seek at least £35m for Spence this summer, with the player “very open” to a Liverpool move if a formal offer arrives. That figure sets the starting point for any negotiation, not the ceiling.

Inside the game, some believe even that number undersells his value. Former Premier League scout Bryan King argued last month that Tottenham would be “stupid” to sanction a sale for anything under £50m.

“I think he’s done well every time he’s played for England,” King said. “They’d be foolish to let him go for £25m, that is for sure. You wouldn’t let him go for £25m. You wouldn’t even start thinking about letting him go for under £50m. We’re talking about a young, current England international. It’s a situation where Tottenham would be stupid to let him go.”

That assessment underlines the tension around any potential deal. Tottenham know they have a valuable asset. Liverpool, operating with clear priorities across the squad, will not want to be drawn into an inflated auction.

For now, Spence sits on a growing shortlist, his name one of several being weighed as Liverpool try to balance immediate needs with long-term planning. Iraola’s concerns about his current right-back options are real, and the clock on the transfer window is ticking louder by the day.
