Declan Rice Eager to Return to Arsenal from World Cup Break

Declan Rice is in no mood to ease himself back into Arsenal life.

Barely a fortnight after playing in the World Cup final on July 18, the midfielder has already told Mikel Arteta he wants to be available for selection from the very first day of his delayed pre-season return.

Arteta, speaking to Arsenal.com, lifted the lid on Rice’s mindset. "When I speak to Declan, he is already talking, 'okay, if I come this day, then I can play (then)', and the rest the same," the manager said. The message is clear: holiday or not, Rice is itching to get back on the pitch.

World Cup core on late duty

Rice is part of a sizeable Arsenal contingent granted extra time off after going deep into the 2026 World Cup. England, Spain, and France internationals in the squad all featured right up until the final day of the tournament.

For England, that group includes Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze. Their last game came on July 18, and club planning dictates they receive a minimum three-week break. That pushes their official return date into the second week of August.

Arteta admitted he is effectively juggling “three different pre-seasons with different groups”, as those who reported back earlier work on a different schedule to the latecomers. For him, though, the detail of the programme matters less than the mindset.

"The most important thing is not the programme, it is the attitude behind the programme," he said. Rice, by the sound of it, is setting the tone.

Eyeing Dortmund – on day one

Rice’s determination opens up a tantalising possibility. His holiday is due to end on August 9 – the same day Arsenal face Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup at the Emirates Stadium.

Normally, a player returning from a three-week break would be eased back in: tests, light sessions, then a gradual build-up to match fitness. You don’t usually throw someone straight from the sun-lounger into a competitive friendly on day one.

Rice is pushing against that convention. If he gets his way, he could feature in some capacity against Dortmund as soon as he’s back with the squad.

From the club’s perspective, the medical and performance staff will almost certainly lean towards caution. Arsenal have bigger targets in mind than a one-off August showpiece. The more logical plan is to use that week to prepare Rice for the friendlies that follow: Como on the Wednesday, then the Community Shield against Manchester City on the Sunday.

That’s the real start line for Arsenal’s season. And for Rice.

Setting the tempo for Arsenal’s season

Even a short cameo against Dortmund, though, would be significant. A few minutes in front of the home crowd, a few early touches, a reminder of his presence at the heart of Arteta’s project – all of it would sharpen him up for Como and, more importantly, City.

It would also send a message through the dressing room. After a draining World Cup run, one of Arsenal’s leaders is willing to cut the transition period to the bare minimum.

Arteta wanted attitude behind the programme. Rice is offering exactly that. The only question now is how quickly Arsenal dare let him loose.
