Crystal Palace Prepares for Historic UEFA Europa League Debut
Crystal Palace are set for a night they have waited their entire history for – and Pierre Sage might just have two of his main weapons back in time.
The club’s first-ever UEFA Europa League fixture arrives on Thursday under the Selhurst Park lights, with Polish champions Lech Poznan the visitors for the league phase opener. The occasion is big. The team news is even bigger.
Sarr and Nketiah back in the frame
Ismaila Sarr, last season’s top scorer, has not kicked a competitive ball this campaign. Injury has kept him stuck on the sidelines while Palace launched into a season that was always going to be demanding. Now, on the eve of their European debut, he is finally close.
“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said, offering exactly the kind of update supporters wanted to hear.
Nketiah’s story is different but just as significant. He started the first three games of the season, then disappeared from the teamsheet for last week’s home fixtures. His absence was felt. His possible return feels like a jolt of electricity for a squad about to step onto the continental stage.
Both forwards have trained this week. Both, Sage insists, look sharp. For a manager preparing for a historic night, the timing could hardly be better.
Henderson out – but locked in
Not every headline from the press conference revolved around the front line. At the other end of the pitch, Dean Henderson remains unavailable, still sidelined alongside Jean-Philippe Mateta. Sage is targeting the period after the upcoming international break for their comebacks.
Off the pitch, though, Henderson delivered a major lift. Just before Sage faced the media, Palace announced their captain had signed a new long-term contract, tying him to the club until 2030.
“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, underlining how central Henderson is to the dressing room and the team’s identity.
No saves from him on Thursday. But his commitment to the club echoes loudly around Selhurst Park.
A historic night under the lights
So Palace head into their Europa League bow with a blend of anticipation and relief. Reinforcements are close. Their captain’s future is secured. The stadium will be full, the cameras on, the anthem new.
Lech Poznan arrive as champions of Poland and with European experience on their side. Palace arrive as newcomers to this stage, hungry and untested.
