Cole Palmer's England Return Delayed by Injury
Cole Palmer’s England return has been put on ice.
The Chelsea forward is set to pull out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures after picking up a minor injury, cutting short what was supposed to be his redemption arc on the international stage.
Recall halted before it really began
Palmer’s inclusion had already stirred debate. Left out of England’s World Cup squad in contentious fashion, the 24-year-old was brought back by Tuchel with a clear challenge ringing in his ears. The England manager publicly insisted Palmer had “a point to prove” and needed “to step up” if he wanted to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”.
This was meant to be that chance. A run of four Nations League games, a long camp, a proper look at a player in form.
Instead, he will now miss the extended international break.
England face World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on 26 September, then head to the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October, before welcoming the Czechs back to Wembley on 6 October. Palmer will not be involved.
Heavy club workload, small but costly setback
The timing is brutal, even if the injury is described as minor.
Palmer played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea in their 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another game in which he was asked to carry a heavy creative load. Since the start of the season, after a summer spent stewing on that World Cup omission, he has been central to Chelsea’s plans.
He has started six of their seven matches, gone the distance in five, scored four goals and supplied two assists. The numbers underline why Tuchel turned back to him. They also hint at why his body may be creaking now.
This is not Palmer’s first physical concern. In the 2025-26 campaign he was troubled by a recurring groin problem, an issue that baffled then-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City, who said the situation “did not make sense”.
That history makes any new setback, however small, a red flag England are unwilling to ignore.
International momentum stalled again
Palmer’s last appearance for his country came in March, in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan. Since then, his story with England has been one of pauses and frustrations rather than progress.
Tuchel’s recall hinted at a reset. A clean slate for a player in his prime years, finally marrying promise with end product at club level.
Now the reset has to wait.
England move into a demanding four-game Nations League block without one of the Premier League’s form forwards. Palmer returns to Chelsea to recover, his international momentum checked once more, and the question lingers: how many more chances like this can he afford to miss?
